This position is responsible for assisting the Solid Waste and Recycling Program staff with outreach and education as well as assisting in moving materials during festivals and some minor sorting of materials received at events staffed by the County recycling program. Other work may be assigned depending on the knowledge level of the applicant such as working on a school education program on recycling or leading compost training session. An employee in this class may be assigned to work on specific education and outreach programs, including the recycling stars program and/or and glass on the side (GOTS) Program in which contents of recycling carts are evaluated and educational materials provided to residents and data evaluations conducted.

The schedule varies depending on the needs of the department.
Hours per Week:
up to 15 hours per week based on Department needs.All employees must strictly adhere to confidentiality guidelines.

Assists with outreach events, mostly on nights and weekends throughout the year, as well as door-knocking and other activities involving direct contact with the public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (GED)
AND
six-months (6 months) of related experience and working directly with the public. NOTE: Related experience could be leading environmentally oriented camps, environmental outreach, or education, participating in environmental clean-up events, etc. defined broadly but with some relevance to the work expected.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina may be required, depending on assignment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND POSSIBLE HAZARDS
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions (with or without reasonable accommodation) of standing, sitting, pushing, pulling, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting, climbing, carrying, grasping, reaching, talking, hearing, handling and repetitive motions of the hands, wrists, and feet.
Jobs may include walking or standing in a variety of weather conditions, as well as moving/rolling carts of recyclables or compostable items that may weight up to 200 pounds and lifting bins full of recyclables weighing up to 25 pounds.
Worker is subject to fall hazard, pinch hazard, driving during heavy traffic and inclement weather. Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
