Description of Job
Fish health laboratory technician with experience in microbiology related to fish diseases. Major responsibilities include performing complex laboratory testing in the areas of bacteriology, virology,
parasitology, and PCR, as well as sample collection. Applicant must be able to work both independently, and as part of a team, to conduct microbiological assays and assist others in laboratories as needed.
Significant experience in a diagnostic microbiological lab environment is preferred. The candidate must have knowledge and experience in biological and molecular laboratory techniques, as well as the ability to use various laboratory equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, balances, etc. This position will require some sporadic travel, but most work will be conducted on site. Work hours will
be limited to 40 hours per week. Specific responsibilities may include:
Collecting, receiving, labeling, and analyzing samples related to fish health inspections.
Performing microscopic, serological, and biochemical assays to identify
bacterial/viral/parasitological pathogens.
Maintaining laboratory records including daily equipment logs, media logs, etc.
Preparing reagents and media for routine laboratory use.
Maintaining laboratory areas, equipment, and glassware in a clean and orderly fashion.
Cleaning, sterilizing, and calibrating laboratory equipment as needed.
Recording case data and test results accurately and in the specified format.
Providing QA program support for the AAHL by completing QA assignments, and ensuring adherence to both the AFS Fish Health Section of the QA Laboratory Program and AAHL SOPs.
