Who We Are Looking For:

AEC, Inc. is seeking qualified local candidates for a Technical Writer position in the Portland, Oregon metro area. Candidates with strong mechanical knowledge in automotive, maintenance, machinery, or industrial equipment and an aptitude for writing will be successful in this position.

The Technical Writer will be primarily responsible for creating and updating technical procedures and other documentation based on on-site observation of equipment and processes at customer locations in the Portland metro area, existing procedures, engineering data (including electrical schematics and mechanical drawings), and their own technical experience. The applicant must know how to quickly identify technical irregularities or conflicts, determine the validity of conflicting data sources, and successfully resolve any problems.

They will be expected to build strong working relationships with co-workers and customers. They must successfully communicate with individuals in a broad range of positions and from a variety of backgrounds in order to assure that the customers\xe2\x80\x99 real needs are being met. A successful applicant must be able to manage their own schedule and resources while working closely with customers in order to meet sometimes dynamic deadlines. The technical writer is also responsible for identifying and clearly defining customers\xe2\x80\x99 future needs and developing strategies for meeting these needs.

The Technical Writer position requires dedication to meeting the customers\xe2\x80\x99 needs by working when and where required but allows a high degree of flexibility in both schedule and location outside of the customers\xe2\x80\x99 requirements. Candidates are required to have their own transportation to the customer\xe2\x80\x99s location. When not at a customer\xe2\x80\x99s location, the Technical Writer will be able to work remotely on a schedule coordinated with their teammates.

A mechanical background is required. Previous technical writing experience is not required for candidates with a demonstrable aptitude for reading and writing in English. Candidates will be provided with on-the- job training for this position.

Qualifications:

• Strong command of the English language, including the ability to read and understand technical descriptions and processes, research unfamiliar technology, and create technical descriptions and step-by-step instructions is required.
• The ability to understand mechanical and electrical systems through physical observation and/or reading of technical data such as blueprints and wiring diagrams is required.
• A background of hands-on experience is highly recommended.
• Basic computer skills, including typing and familiarity with MS Office products.
• Familiarity with MS Word, Adobe FrameMaker, XML/SGML authoring tools, or technical illustration and CAD drafting software is a plus.
• US Citizenship is required.
• The ability to regularly travel to and work at locations within the Portland metro area (local travel expenses are compensated) is required.
• The ability to work independently and on a highly flexible schedule, including occasional on-call and shift-scheduled work is required.
• Extended standing and the ability to climb stairs and ladders is required.
• Experience in an industrial environment, including basic general knowledge of jobsite physical and electrical hazards is a plus.
• Experience with heavy equipment maintenance is a plus.
