Job Description

The Technical Publications Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the development, accuracy, and timely delivery of technical documentation, including manuals, service bulletins, illustrated parts catalogs, and other product support materials. This role ensures that documentation meets industry standards, supports product usability, aligns with organizational goals and customer expectations while also mentoring team members and coordinating with cross-functional departments.

Responsibilities

Guide, mentor, and support a team of writers and illustrators to deliver precise and timely documentation. Provide coaching and technical feedback to enhance team capabilities, especially in visual communication and illustration techniques. Promote knowledge sharing and continuous skill development across the team. Creation and revision of technical illustrations, including exploded views, assembly diagrams, schematics, and cutaways. Interpret engineering drawings and CAD models to develop accurate visual representations for manuals and service guides. Ensure illustrations meet industry standards and are optimized for both print and digital formats. Collaborate with engineering and supplier teams to update visuals based on design changes and product revisions. Plan, assign, and track documentation projects to ensure on-time delivery and alignment with product release schedules. Review and approve technical content for clarity, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory and customer requirements. Maintain and improve documentation processes, templates, and tools to support scalable and consistent output. Manage documentation workflows using content management systems (CMS) and product lifecycle management (PLM) tools. Support onboarding and training of new team members on illustration tools, documentation standards, and internal processes. Assist service teams in identifying and ordering correct spare parts through accurate visual documentation. Contribute to cost-out initiatives by providing innovative design solutions and improving illustration efficiency. Compliance & Continuous Improvement. Participate in audits and ensure documentation complies with industry regulations and customer expectations. Identify opportunities for automation and process improvement in illustration and documentation development.

Competencies

Bachelor's degree with 3 to 6 years of years related experience in engineering, manufacturing, or a related technical field, with at least 2 years in a lead or senior role. Ability to interpret and understand engineering drawings, documentation and bills of materials. Ability to coordinate activities between various teams. Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Working knowledge of Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word Processing software. Ability to interpret a variety of information furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schematic form. Attention to detail is critical. Experience with product lifecycle management (PLM) and/or enterprise resource planning (ERP) like Infor LN. Excellent communication and leadership skills. Experience working with bills of material, engineering drawings, schematics and/or technical illustrations. 3D CAD skills are mandatory. Experience with PTC - Creo, IsoDraw are beneficial. Experience in technical writing or engineering documentation or illustrations, engineering drawings, bills of material, item data, and quality requirements are preferred. Previous experience in original equipment and/or aftermarket manufacturing facility preferred. Ability to analyze user feedback and improve documentation usability. Understanding of Agile or Scrum methodologies. Ability to travel up to 20% national and international travel to customer or supplier sites. Ability to maintain a valid driver's license and passport. Ability to obtain and maintain Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) certification.
