Position Overview

The Technical Consultant reports directly to the Manager of Laboratory Services and exercises general supervision of the satellite laboratory staff. This role requires accessibility to the laboratory to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation. The Technical Consultant plays a critical role in ensuring the quality and accuracy of laboratory testing and operations.


General Duties and Responsibilities

Provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation to the laboratory as needed. Select test methodology appropriate for the clinical use of test results. Verify test procedures performed and establish the laboratory's test performance characteristics, including precision and accuracy of each test and test system. Enroll and participate in an HHS-approved proficiency testing program commensurate with the services offered. Perform annual employee performance evaluations. Suggest and implement laboratory policies and procedures. Make recommendations for improvements to the Lab Manager. Assist in preparation, writing, and editing of procedure manuals. Establish a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed, including setting parameters for acceptable levels of analytic performance and ensuring these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing process--from specimen receipt through sample analysis and reporting of test results. Resolve technical problems and ensure remedial actions are taken promptly. Ensure patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been completed and the test system is functioning properly. Identify training needs and assure that each individual performing tests receives regular in-service training and education appropriate for the type and complexity of laboratory services performed. Evaluate the competency of all testing personnel and assure staff maintain their competency to perform test procedures and report test results promptly, accurately, and proficiently.

Education and Experience Requirements

Must possess a current license issued by the state in which the laboratory is located and meet one of the following criteria:


Be certified in anatomic or clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology or the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology. Hold a Doctorate or master's degree in chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science or medical technology. Have earned a bachelor's degree in laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution and have at least 2 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in non-waived testing, in the designated specialty or subspecialty areas of service for which the technical consultant is responsible. Have earned an associate degree in medical laboratory technology, medical laboratory science, or clinical laboratory science; and have at least 4 years of laboratory training or experience, or both in non-waived testing, in the designated specialty or subspecialty areas of service for which the technical consultant is responsible.
