Our Teaching Artists are both practicing artists and have experience teaching in and out of the classroom. We believe that access to high-quality artists, art materials, art spaces, and other art resources is integral to the educational and art ecosystem.

Teaching Artist Responsibilities:



Develop high-quality visual arts lesson plans and activities that can be utilized in traditional and non-traditional settings (e.g. classrooms, community centers, parks). All lesson plans must be submitted to Supervisors before teaching. Keep detailed records of all teaching experiences. Prepare the classroom/site by gathering and setting up equipment and supplies. Encourage and assist students in individual projects. Provide instruction on the use of various art materials (e.g. graphite and charcoal pencils, oil, acrylic, and watercolor paint, and other art materials). Research various art history topics/artists and be prepared to share research with students. Observe students' progress and be ready to give a report. Recording all demographics related to each class (attendance, keeping student files/portfolios, and other necessary demographics). Ensure that the classroom is clean after each lesson. Monitor inventory and source art supplies, as needed. Contractors' fee/invoice should reflect labor and materials. In some instances, Live Coal may provide supplies. Supervise and collaborate with Teaching Assistants when applicable. Attend staff meetings (if employed) related to art classes. If Contracted, must attend meeting(s) with Supervisor before starting work and as requested by Organization.

Teaching Artist Requirements:



Minimal Associate's or Bachelor's degree in fine arts A minimum of three years of experience teaching visual arts (teaching certification not required, but strongly preferred). Demonstrate excellence in a variety of art techniques. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills, such as being able to work with Microsoft office and google docs. Capacity to supervise group work. Outstanding planning and problem-solving skills. Supportive, flexible disposition. Available to work during the day. Flexible hours. Transportation and being able to load art supplies in and out of own vehicle and transport to schools and various sites. Must submit 10-15 samples of personal artwork from past five years (can be shared electronically or via website).

Pay Rate



Contractor shall be paid at various rates dependent upon the services rendered. The Contractor shall follow the payment rate based on the services described below and bill the Organization accordingly. The Organization reserves the right to change the rate, but will always do so in writing and notify Contractor prior to any services rendered by the Contractor. Contractor is responsible for documenting services and including the description of services in each invoice:

a. Administrative Fulfillments: $18 p/hr - Examples include: meetings with Organization staff and/or work site personnel to establish contractual work, general administrative needs to fulfill contract, such as organizing, categorizing, labeling student work, teaching site prep/clean up, observing lead teaching artist/staff (no direct teaching involved). This work must be pre-approved by Organization.

b. Assistant Teaching Artist: $32 p/hr - Examples include actively assisting a Lead Teaching Artist/Staff Member. Co-teaching with Lead Teacher. Examples include assisting with developing lesson plans and delivering part of the lesson plan.

c. Substitute Teaching Artist: $40 p/hr - Delivering lesson plans as designed by Lead Teaching Artist/Staff Member. Substitute Teaching Artist will commute to the location of the assigned site at least 30 minutes before the start of class/workshop to prepare for delivering the lesson and ensure the classroom/site is cleaned up after sessions. (See a. above for details.) When you are contracted as a Substitute Teaching Artist, the Organization provides the supplies needed.

d. Lead Teaching Artist: $50 p/hr - Independently developing and delivering lesson plans (lesson plans may be subject to review by Live Coal staff to ensure quality and educational standards are met).

Other Requirements:



Track teaching hours to ensure the contract is ful?lled. As applicable, reschedule missed or incomplete sessions in coordination with Supervisor, Host Teacher, and/or Teaching Assistant to ensure ful?llment of contract.

Job Type: Contract

Pay: $18.00 - $50.00 per hour

Expected hours: 2 - 15 per week
