Office of Communicable Disease Epidemiology | Remote/Homebased | Part Time PROJECT Appointment

This project position is funded through December 31, 2029. It is a part-time position with an expected schedule of approximately 4 hours per week (16 hours per month). This recruitment is open to Washington residents, including those living on the Washington-Idaho and Washington-Oregon border areas.

THE OPPORTUNITY:



Join a dedicated team at the Washington State Department of Health working to eliminate tuberculosis and protect communities across the state. As our TB Medical Consultant, you'll serve as the state's lead clinical expert, providing guidance to local health teams and providers on diagnosis, treatment, complex cases, and infection control while helping shape statewide standards and policy.
This role offers a rare blend of hands-on clinical leadership, mentorship, and public health influence, all focused on reducing the burden of TB and strengthening Washington's response to infectious diseases.

Key Responsibilities

:Serve as the primary TB medical expert, delivering timely consultation on diagnosis, treatment, case management, and infection control to local health partners and clinicians statewide Review and guide management of the most challenging cases, including drug-resistant TB, in collaboration with other Washington TB experts Shape clinical policy by developing, updating, and advising on state TB guidelines, standards, and regulations Mentor and direct TB nurse consultants on clinical decisions and quality assurance Lead workgroups, deliver statewide trainings and webinars, and represent the program at key meetings and conferences Provide surge support during public health emergencies involving infectious diseases

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Required Licensure and Education:

AvalidlicensetopracticemedicineandsurgeryinthestateofWashington. Eligible for certification from a program accredited by the American Board of Medical specialties (Certification must be obtained within the six ( 6) month probationary period as a condition of continued employment). Completion of an approved residency program in the designated specialty area. Medical or osteopathic medicine (MDorDO) degree from an accredited program

Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



Six (6) years of work experience in clinical management, diagnosis, and/or treatment of tuberculosis (TB) OR Two (2) years of demonstrated training in this area and Four (4) years of work experience (Work experience may have been gained through paid or unpaid activities). In-depth knowledge of tuberculosis infection, disease management, and contact investigation principles. Knowledge of public health surveillance and outbreak response procedures. Skilled in providing clear, evidence-based clinical consultation in verbal and written formats. Ability to develop and interpret policies, standards, and protocols for clinical and programmatic TB control. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with local health jurisdictions, healthcare providers, and partner agencies.

Preferred/Desired Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience:

Current Board Certification in Infectious Disease, Pulmonary Medicine, or a related field. Experience working in a public health or governmental health agency. Experience developing and delivering training or educational materials for health professionals. Experience in multi-drug resistant (MDR) or extensively drug-resistant (XDR) TB case management. Experience with CDC TB Cooperative Agreement projects or federally funded public health initiatives. Familiarity with Washington State RCW/WAC related to communicable disease control. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting at public health meetings or conferences.

Work Setting, including hazards:

Although this position's work may occasionally require in-person attendance to perform duties in the field at various locations throughout Washington State, the official duty station is home-based. When not traveling for work, this position may work from home, remotely from an alternate location, or at the Public Health Laboratories located in Shoreline, WA. Field work may involve exposure to infections hazards. While working onsite at the Public Health Laboratories work will be done in an open cubicle office setting. Exposure to infectious biological material, dried blood, and various laboratory chemicals may occur. Most of this work is sedentary in nature and requires performing repetitive work using a computer for the majority of the workday with exposure to hazards limited to those commonly found in home office environments.

Schedule (i.e., hours and days):

This is a part-time position that will perform work during standard DOH business hours are Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A flexible work schedule may be considered at the employee's request, subject to supervisory approval.

Travel Requirements:

Occasional travel is required to meet with customers, provide in-person training, conduct community outreach, etc. Locations for travel may include local health offices, medical facilities, jails or prisons, etc. When driving for state business, the employee must be able to legally operate a state or privately-owned vehicle; OR provide alternate transportation while on state business.

Tools and Equipment:

This position uses standard office furniture and equipment, such as a desk, office chair, cell phone, computer, monitor(s), keyboard, and mouse; and when in the office, the position may also require the use of a printer, phone, e-fax machine, and/or copy machine. Field outbreak investigation work may involve the use of personal protective equipment.

Customer Interactions:

The position regularly requires engaging with customers in a variety of settings including agency staff, agency managers, agency supervisors, legislators, governor's office staff, local health jurisdictions, federal government, State Board of Health, external partners, statewide professional associations and the CDC. The position may require interaction on the telephone and in writing with customers, some of whom may be upset, frustrated, or irate.

Other:

The DOH campus is smoke-free, drug-free, alcohol-free, scent-neutral environment. Position maybe required to conduct and/or participate in public health emergency preparedness and response activities. This position does not have union representations and is not covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
