Nature of Work

Under close supervision, at the entry level, these positions examine tax returns for completeness, accuracy and compliance with state tax laws. This work is performed in accordance with statutes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures governing the lawful and timely completion of tax returns. Work requires strict confidentiality. These positions serve a probationary period of one (1) year. Perform related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics
These positions are distinguished from the Tax Audit Clerk by operating in a training capacity. Work is reviewed closely for accuracy.

Examples of Work

  • Acquire knowledge of state tax laws and ability to examine tax returns for compliance.
  • Verify mathematical accuracy and determine allowable credits, exemptions, methods, tax due and tax refunds by computing interest and additions to tax for late tax payments and by reviewing returns for correct name, address, social security numbers and/or federal identification number.
  • Utilize the computer database to research and compile information, perform updates, and audit returns.
  • Secure additional information from the taxpayer by letter or telephone, assist taxpayers with questions concerning deadlines, penalties, tax statutes, regulations; communicate with revenue agents, business officials and taxpayers to secure and verify account information.
  • Learn to issue assessments and liens; learn to compute and issue computer generated billings.
  • Prepare files for legal action on delinquent accounts.
  • Examine returns of taxpayers to determine if a liability exists and establish the taxpayer\'s accuracy in determining what type of business is being conducted to determine which tax classifications are appropriate.
  • Review payments received for accuracy.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to learn state tax laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to applicable tax statutes administered by division.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to learn to use various software tools.
  • Ability to establish and maintain current files and records of taxpayer\'s accounts.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with taxpayer information.
Minimum Qualifications

Training: Associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Competitive candidates may receive probationary appointment pending official verification of the qualifying degree. The qualifying degree must be verified before the employee may be certified as permanent.
OR
Substitution: High school diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years of experience at the State Tax Division, or two (2) years of experience in providing accounting support and/or clerical office support for the required training.
