Position Summary

Oversees facility operations, vivarium equipment, and animal laboratory processes. Directly supervises 6-15 husbandry personnel. Assists the Facility Manager in the management of the animal care and husbandry program in accordance with the regulations and guidelines of Animal Welfare Act, the Public Health Service, and University policies to assure a quality animal care program that supports the research and teaching at Washington University.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities



  • Plan, direct, supervise and coordinate the daily activities of the Animal Care Staff responsible for the daily care of research animals.
  • Manage up 15 direct reports, including interviewing, on-the-job training, performance management and evaluation, career development discussions and oversight of employee work schedules and attendance.
  • Ensure that the established SOPs are properly executed and department policies are followed.
  • Schedule daily activities and distribute workload to staff.
  • Train the husbandry staff on SOPs and in daily duties. Accountable for monitoring and managing employee work performance and associated files.
  • Provide PI and lab staff facility walk through and barrier training. Supervisor may assist with technical procedures including animal identification, breeding and euthanasia.
  • Conduct or oversee census and quality assurance activities in the facility.
  • Perform additional duties as directed by the facility manager or the department.
Working Conditions The individual must be able to lift 50 lbs. and pass a pre-employment physical exam.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree and AALAS certification (LAT).
  • Three years of experience in a laboratory animal care.
  • One year of supervisory experience.
  • Ability to comprehend written and spoken terms used in a biomedical research environment.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow SOPs and written instructions from veterinary, supervisory and research staff.
  • Conscientious attitude and concern for quality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate leadership abilities.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent certification plus four years relevant experience or equivalent education and experience in laboratory animal science or supervision.

Salary Range

$40,100.00 - $72,700.00 / Annually The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one\'s qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
