Substitute Teaching Assistant / Bus Monitor Head Start Program (Part-time)

MUST BE AVAILABLE EARLY MORNING AND ON SHORT NOTICE

ASSIGNMENTS INCLUDE HEAD START CLASSROOMS IN SUMMERSVILLE, MT. LOOKOUT, NETTIE, CRAIGSVILLE AND BRICH RIVER

Position(s) Summary:

The

Substitute

fills the role for both the Teaching Assistant and the Bus Monitor as needed. The Teaching

Assistant

works in the classroom with the Lead Teacher implementing learning experiences that advance the intellectual and physical development of children. The

Bus Monitor

works on the bus in collaboration with the Bus Driver to supervise children on their bus route to and from the Learning Center.

Essential/Primary Responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant:

1. Provide appropriate supervision of the children that creates a safe environment

2. Exercise positive guidance techniques that encourage children to learn and practice appropriate and acceptable behavior

3. Provide an environment that is interesting and enjoyable, while integrating educational aspects of Head Start components into the daily program

4. Create a supportive social and emotional climate, which develops positive self-concepts and promotes physical development

5. Interact with parents to communicate how programs work and how their child is growing and learning

6. Share the same menu to the extent possible encouraging interesting conversation not limited to only subjects related to food and nutrition, demonstrating positive attitude toward all foods served

Essential/Primary Responsibilities of the Bus Monitor:

1. Accompany driver to pick up and take home all children assigned to the route

2. Escort children on and off the bus at bus stop and at program facilities

3. Assist children into and out of safety seat restraints and seat belts as necessary, ensuring restraints and belts are properly adjusted /fastened and children are secure

4. Ensure that children are released only to authorized individuals utilizing Child Passenger Checklist; Ensure that unauthorized passengers do not board the bus.

5. Conducts a thorough post trip inspection for children or items left on the bus at end of route

6. Secure the vehicle in an emergency situation in accordance with State, Federal and Agency guidelines

7. Interacts with children throughout their time on the bus, extending and reinforcing School Readiness Goals with activities such as leading children in singing, telling stories, playing visual games, etc.

8. Perform other duties as needed or required

Qualifications:

1. Pass a post-offer physical examination and biannually thereafter; be able to physically assist/lift and carry up to 50 lbs. (children may need to be carried from a vehicle in case of an emergency) 45 CFR 1310.16(a)(2)

2. Pass a Criminal Information Background Check. (45 CFR 1301.31(b)(1)(iii)

3. Pass a Child and Adult Abuse Clearance (45 CFR 1301.31(b)(2)

4. Maintain current First Aid and CPR certification

5. Maintain Food Handlers Permit

6. Perform a pre-employment tuberculosis risk assessment by a licensed health care provider.

Other General Requirements/Skills:

Perform travel relating to training, meetings and conferences, etc. Participate and complete required job related training. Demonstrate effective communication skills, both orally and written.
4. Demonstrate punctuality and good attendance.

Follow agency/program policies and procedures with an emphasis on safety and confidentiality. Represent the agency and program in a professional manner and maintain a positive attitude with children, parents and supporting staff. Equal Opportunity Employer
