TITLE OF VACANCY:

Substitute Teacher for Career Academy Program (CAP) Participants

ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT:

The West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB)



LOCATION:

Romney, West Virginia



On an on call, as needed basis, provides appropriate instruction to postgraduate students and ensures that the students meet the learning objectives developed in accordance with the Career Academy Program objectives.



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


+ Assist with the implementation of lesson plans and instructional activities for individuals or small groups, following program curricula and student Personal Learning Plans (PLPs).
+ Support instructional and learning strategies that reflect an understanding of the learning styles, needs, and exceptionalities of students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing or Blind/Visually Impaired.
+ Collaborate with CAP instructional staff to align instructional support with program goals, objectives, and established methods.
+ Assist students in developing effective study strategies, organizational habits, and independent learning skills.
+ Help prepare, adapt, and distribute accessible instructional materials (tactile/large-print materials, visual supports, captioned resources, auditory alternatives) as directed by program staff.
+ Support ongoing assessment of student progress by documenting observations, engagement, and task completion through the CAP instructional documentation system.
+ Provide instructional support to adult learners preparing for NOCTI assessments for service personnel by reinforcing curriculum content, applied skills, and assessment strategies.
+ Maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment, taking all reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
+ Reinforce instructional expectations, routines, and skill-building activities to promote student independence and transition readiness.
+ Maintain regular communication with the Transition Coordinator and CAP instructional team in person, electronically, and through required documentation systems.
+ Report academic, behavioral, or safety concerns promptly to supervising staff.
+ Participate in scheduled meetings, planning sessions, or professional development as requested.
+ Follow all WVSDB, departmental, and state policies, including confidentiality requirements and the Employee Code of Conduct
+ Demonstrate professional work habits, including punctuality, reliability, and positive communication with students, colleagues, families, and supervisors.
+ Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent and/or immediate supervisor.




QUALIFICATIONS:

+ Valid teaching certificate authorizing the individual to teach, pursuant to WV Code 18A-3-2.
+ Candidates with ASL skill and/or braille and accessible educational materials for the blind preferred
+ Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code 18-5-15c and/or 18A-3-10, as appropriate.
+ Meets the qualifications outlined in WV Code 18A-3-2a.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. He/she shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances which affect employee productivity, safety, or judgement will not be tolerated.

+ The staff member understands that work assignments may change or be added as priorities emerge.





SALARY:



Pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-2, in accordance with WVSDB Professional Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level. Salary supplement available for ASL skill level as defined by the WVSDB Communication Policy 7020.07.



EVALUATION

:

Performance evaluation in accordance with West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5310.
