Mission Statement of the

Office of State Fire Marshal

: To uphold the law and provide for the protection of life and property from the hazards of fire or explosion, to ensure the safety of our citizens in the constructed environment, to provide equal access to disabled individuals and to promote the efficient use of energy in commercial buildings.



This position is located in the Fire Investigations Unit (FIU), only open to permanent State Fire Marshal employees. Domicile is TBD. As a State Fire Marshal Lieutenant, the incumbent ensures reports and programs meet performance expectations, oversees program support functions assigned, and provides mentoring and peer review to co-workers and subordinates. Lieutenants also provide leadership in the absence of the State Fire Marshal Captain when needed.



May carry and use firearms for necessary restraint of persons arrested, or sought to be arrested, for statewide crimes; may execute legal search and arrest warrants.

Minimum Qualifications

All qualifying options will also require an approved certification at the time of appointment (hire) or promotion:



Five years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR



An associate's degree in any field plus four years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR



An associate's degree in a criminal justice field, a fire service field, a construction field, architecture, or an engineering field plus three years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR



A bachelor's degree in any field plus two years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR



A bachelor's degree in a criminal justice field, a fire service field, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field plus one year of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field.

May serve in the following capacities:





Assistant to a supervisor or manager by performing administrative functions. Lead worker, trainer, or mentor over lower-level Deputies. Conduct the most complex inspections and investigations requiring special certifications. Serve as subject matter expert to District Attorneys, Attorney General, United States Attorney, and the insurance industry; provides testimony in court as needed. Assist in coordinating the revision of agency rules, regulations, and procedures to meet required changes; may provide training or conduct presentations on such changes. Perform grant management tasks and submit related reports. Assist in preparing legislation. Work on special projects as assigned. Identify and coordinate fire service resources and manpower responding to emergencies in support of the state disaster plan. Evaluate and inspect emergency shelters for occupancy. Train and respond to man-made or natural disasters or emergencies including, but not limited to, fire, weather, search and rescue, medical, and hazardous material events. Perform and assist with on-scene emergency operations including, but not limited to, coordinating resources and/or manpower.

Promotional for permanent State Fire Marshal employees only.

Career Progression:

This position does not participate in a Career Progression Group.

Work Schedule:

Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday.

Compensation:

The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience. The bi-weekly rate for this position is as follows:

State Fire Marshal Lieutenant (PS115) - $2,161.60
