Summary

This position is located in the Audiology & Speech Pathology Section of GRS Service at Illiana Health Care System. The duties and responsibilities are carried out throughout the medical center including all clinical and other patient areas involved with the service. The speech pathologist at this level conducts diagnostic assessments and evaluation, plans organizes and conducts the rehabilitation program, training, and consultation.

Duties
  • The incumbent is responsible for independent diagnostic assessment and evaluation of cases that are referred for Speech Pathology Services without limitation as to difficulty or complexity.
  • The incumbent will be responsible to conduct interviews with the patients and appropriate family members and/or friends, selects, administers and interprets the diagnostic test necessary to detect and evaluate any type of speech, language, voice and/or swallowing disorders.
  • They will utilize all diagnostic and evaluative procedures common to speech pathology. In addition, they shall stay abreast of all new developments in speech pathology by reading professional journals and by communicating with other professionals in their field.
  • Develops plans for a course of therapy to resolve or minimize speech-related communication conditions that present serious problems to social contacts, educational development or employment opportunities.
  • Establishes and maintains an effective therapy relationship with the patient, family and caregivers. Adjusts treatment plan to patient response and indicators of progress.
  • Responsible for planning and carrying out the assignment, resolving most of the conflicts that arise, coordinating the work with others as necessary and interpreting policy on own initiative in terms of established objectives.
  • Determines the approach to be taken and the methodology to be used. The employee keeps the supervisor informed of progress and potentially controversial matters.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
  • Education: A master\'s degree, or its equivalent, in speech-language pathology, communication disorders or a directly related field from an accredited college or university. "Accredited" means a college or university [recognized] by a regional accreditation organization and an audiology or speech language pathology program [recognized] by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
  • Licensure: Individuals must hold a full, current and unrestricted license to practice both audiology and speech-language pathology in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth or the District of Columbia.
Grade Determinations:
Education and Experience. Must have 1 year of professional speech pathology experience comparable to the next lower level (GS-11) and possess a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice both audiology and speech-language pathology.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the KSAs:
a. Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies;
b. Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures sufficiently to perform clinical services independently;
c. Ability to conduct assessments, provide treatment interventions; and provide consultation to other
health care professionals;
d. Knowledge of contemporary audiology and speech-language pathology practices; and
e. Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology and speech-language pathology
scope of practice.
OR
  • A Masters degree in speech-language pathology, communication disorders and sciences or a related field, from an accredited college or university.
Licensure: Individuals must hold a full, current and unrestricted license in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth or the District of Columbia.

Physical Requirements: The Speech Language Pathologist may engage in the following activities/positions/tasks as defined: Lifting/carrying up to 45 lbs. intermittently, frequent walking, standing, sitting. Occasional stooping, kneeling, overhead reaching, fine manipulation, pushing, and/or pulling. In addition, occasional operation of a motor vehicle may be indicated. Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
