JOB SUMMARY



The Specimen Processing Tech I functions as a member of the laboratory team to perform specimen handling and distribution, sending out reference lab testing, microbiology processing and some limited testing. They help manage the tube system, answer phones and look up results. They can assume other duties as needed such as helping with supplies and performance improvement projects. The Specimen Processing Tech I demonstrates proficiency in specific core competencies, but in addition they have demonstrated eagerness and enthusiasm to learn, as well as the willingness and capability to assume additional responsibilities.


ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES



Promotes the vision and mission of LMH Health Maintains patient confidentiality and excellent customer service skills. Exercises appropriate independent judgment and initiative. Acquires and updates knowledge pertinent to policies, specimen collection, procedures and result reporting. Presents continuing education topics. Performs pre-analytical processing of lab orders and specimens. Performs post-analytical processing of lab results which includes phone requests, faxes and accurate and timely charting and distribution of results. Follows procedures for ordering lab tests into the information system. Performs lab billing and charging procedures for lab services provided. Courier specimens and lab reports to offices internal to the hospital. Practices good phlebotomy skills, using appropriate collection devices, handle all specimens following standard precautions. Demonstrates willingness to adjust schedule to meet department needs if needed. Cross-trains in specimen processing. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position
