INTERNAL POSTING UPSEU (LABORERS)

SPECIAL MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR GRADE 7 ($24.15/hr)

Statement of Duties: The Special Motor Equipment Operator will work with the forestry department maintaining the town\'s urban forest. Responsible for ensuring that all safety practices and measures, including but not limited to work zone safety, removal, maintenance of trees as well as tree related emergencies and all associated safety regulations are adhered to and that personal protective clothing and equipment are utilized. Operates motor equipment in a professional and competent manner and with care taken to perform the work safely and with efficiency. The incumbent shall have a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of mature tree removal, tree pruning practices as well as snow removal and will be responsible for carrying out various other assignments essential to the Central Maintenance Department.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions: The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.   • Operates heavy and unique construction or maintenance equipment primarily log loader and other such as a grader, bulldozer, crane, wheel type loader, backhoe, truck, crawler mounted backhoe, high capacity dump trucks or truck and trailer requiring a Commercial Drivers license
  • Assists in the safe removal and pruning of the Town of West Springfield\'s urban forest
  • Respond to after hours emergencies as directed and assist in emergency response activities related to system failures and/or crises
  • Operates heavy duty equipment for snow removal
  • Performs minor maintenance functions on equipment, including but not limited to checking and maintaining air pressures and fluid levels, lubrication of mechanical joints by applying necessary greases, and routine cleaning of vehicle exterior and interior.
  • Performs tasks generally assigned to a laborer and/or skilled laborer
  • Performs daily vehicle condition inspections and reports as required by law or Department policy
Typical Qualifications

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; and 2-4 years of experience at an accredited technical school or on-the-job training; two years of experience in the operation of heavy automotive equipment or the equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the essential functions of this position.
Special Requirements: Valid Class B Commercial Driver\'s license required with proper endorsements, Class A preferred and Massachusetts 2A/1C Hoisting License required, tanker endorsement preferred.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skill
Knowledge: Principles and practices about the correct, proficient, and safe operation of equipment and assigned vehicles. Applicable Municipal and Department rules and regulations about the safe operation of assigned motor equipment. Rules, regulations, and applicable laws relative to job-related safety. Principles and practices for the operation and maintenance of drinking water systems.
Abilities: * Recognize conditions requiring maintenance and repair.
  • Exercise proper professional and technical judgment.
  • Operate equipment with a high degree of skill and efficiency.
  • Read and follow specifications in engineering blueprints and specifications as they pertain to municipal water and sewer systems and recognize the need for referral to determine safe excavation.
Skills: Effective motor skills necessary to operate various types of equipment and vehicles, good record keeping skills, skill in assessing mechanical, electric, and hydraulic problems and finding solutions.
