Is recruiting for a Special Investigator 1 located in Anchorage or Wasilla!
What you will be doing:
As the Special Investigator you will be enforcing and ensuring compliance with alcohol and marijuana laws and regulations by conducting inspections, investigations, compliance checks and undercover operations. You would use your extensive knowledge of investigative techniques and procedures, rules of evidence and court procedures, interviewing techniques, knowledge of the basic theories of human behavior, as well as other techniques. As a Special Investigator you would be responsible for writing reports, preparing concise and complete documents of various types, obtaining search warrants and drafting accusations and criminal complaints. Special Investigators participate in ongoing law enforcement training including but not limited to community policing, less-lethal weapons, firearms, first aid and CPR. Special Investigators provide training on alcohol and marijuana laws to local and state law enforcement agenices.

In your role you will be an essential part of the enforcement team and the AMCO office. The Special Investigators are a vital position in enforcing the alcohol and marijuana laws and regulations to ensure compliance and protecting the health and safety of Alaskans.

As a Special Investigator you will work with a team of highly dedicated, hard working individuals all working towards the common goal of enforcing alcohol and marijuana regulations and statues. The hours and schedule can be flexible, but you may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Training will be provided in Anchorage. The position is part of the enforcement team that is made up of (7) Special Investigator 1\'s located in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and Wasilla or Palmer, a Special Investigator 2 (Supervisor), and a Criminal Justice Technician 2.

The working conditions you can expect:
The Wasilla position was just relocated to the valley right in the heart of town near the Carrs/Safeway plaza. You will work independently in a nice updated office once training has been complete. There are several eating establishments within walking or driving distance and the office is located right off the Parks Highway for easy accessibility.

The Anchorage position is located on the 16th floor of the Atwood Building in downtown Anchorage with a spectacular view of the inlet, close to the park strip for those summer walks, and within walking distance to various eating establishments. Additionally, there is plenty of covered parking.

Who we are looking for:
AMCO is looking for a candidate that possess some or all of the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Successful ability to interpret, comprehend, and communicate statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Skill in conducting investigations, detecting or verifying suspected violations, gathering and analyzing facts, reasoning logically, drawing valid conclusions and making appropriate recommendations, and prepare complete and concise reports.
  • Considerable knowledge of investigative techniques and procedures, rules of evidence and court procedure, principles of identification, preservation, and presentation of evidence, sources of information used in locating persons, laws of arrests, search and seizure, and service of legal processes, and the legal rights of citizens.
  • Completed law enforcement instructor development training and/or are certified instructor in law enforcement competencies; and
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a proficiency in the use of computer technology and software programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe, and Teams.
Special Notice:
  • Must meet the requirements for commission as a Peace Officer with the State of Alaska under Alaska Statutes 4.06.110 and 17.38.131 as a condition of hire.
  • Requires frequent travel within the State of Alaska by motor vehicle, ATV, snow machine and/or small aircraft in a variety of weather conditions, including travel to rural communities off of the road system
  • This position may be required to operate vehicles such as a snow machine or ATV while in rural communities.
  • This position requires security clearance to access APSIN (Alaska Public Safety Information Network) and ARMS (Alaska Report Management System).
  • Due to the nature of the position, applicant must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Requires a valid Alaska Driver\'s license.
  • This position is subject to exposure of tobacco and/or marijuana smoke filled environments and may have contact with inebriated or hostile individuals.
Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in
  • Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one\'s knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.
  • Criminal Investigation: Knowledge of the guidelines, regulations, and procedures associated with criminal investigation, including evidence detection and handling and drawing appropriate factual inferences and conclusions.
  • Criminal Law: Knowledge of state and Federal criminal laws, including procedures, regulations, guidelines, and precedents related to admissibility of evidence and prosecution.
  • Integrity/Honesty: Contributes to maintaining the integrity of the organization; displays high standards of ethical conduct and understands the impact of violating these standards on an organization, self, and others; is trustworthy.
  • Search: Knowledge of the laws, principles and methods of conducting searches on personal property such as vehicles, documents, buildings, and items.
Equivalent to those typically gained by:
Any combination of preparatory post-secondary education and/or progressively responsible experience in investigative work performing duties such as locating and gathering information, chain of custody of evidence and/or testimony to be used in civil or criminal proceedings, administrative actions, or governmentally regulated activities which included preparing reports in support of attorneys or agencies engaged in administrative adjudication, and/or detecting and verify suspected fraud, licensing violations, and other violations of state law.

An Alaska Driver\'s License is required.

Applicants applying for a position in the AMCO must meet the requirements for commission as a Peace Officer with the State of Alaska under Alaska Statutes 4.06.110 and 17.38.131 as a condition of hire.

Upon appointment applicants applying for a position in the DEC Environmental Crimes Unit must meet the requirements to be Commissioned as a State of Alaska Peace Officer as designated under Alaska Statute 46.03.890.

Applicants must pass a background investigation, which includes a criminal record check for conviction of felony or misdemeanor crimes, as a prerequisite to employment.
