The Special Equipment Mechanic, under supervision, ensures the maintenance, preventative maintenance, and repair of fleet vehicles and equipment. Assists with maintaining shop inventories, shop condition, record keeping, and parts orders.

Responsibilities:

Perform advanced inspections, diagnoses, maintenance, preventative maintenance, testing, and repair of vehicles, tractors, farm implements, trailers, appliances, natural gas equipment and other technical equipment utilized for research, field operational support and center operations in accordance with manufacturer\'s guidelines, which requires operating a vehicle

Perform tune ups, oil changes, filter changes, lubrication, engine overhauls , and other required maintenance, which requires operating a vehicle

Ensure repairs are logged and completed in a timely manner

Submit vehicle and equipment status reports to requesting programs

Maintain inventory and maintenance records in a tracking database, logs, and mileage reports; assist with accountability of equipment, materials, and replacement parts

Purchase supplies, equipment, and materials in accordance with AgriLife regulations

Maintain a clean and organized work, office and storage area at all times

Assist with weekly Project Safety Analysis of facilities and report any needed maintenance

Conduct routine maintenance and repairs on Centers buildings and grounds

Assist in planning and construction or renovation of Center structures

Maintain Center fuel tanks, records, purchases, and fuel system maintenance

Participate as a member of the Center Services Team in shop, farm and Center support staffs\xe2\x80\x99 conduction of Center activities

Perform welding in heating, cutting and brazing of ferrous and non-ferrous metals with acetylene electrical equipment

Install new or repair existing plumbing lines

Operate machinery to include but not limited to table saw, band saw, jointer, drill press, hand tools, trencher, and cherry picker

Monitor heating and cooling systems for proper function and correct temperatures

Operate backhoe, front end loader, tractors, hook up and pull trailers

Work indoors and outdoors as required which includes walking, the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stretching, pulling and pushing

Support projects as needed to accomplish their research objectives

Other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience

One year of related experience in maintenance or repair of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of vehicle maintenance

Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

Valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license

Five Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification or ability to obtain within one year of employment

Computer skills including Microsoft Office and Adobe

Other Requirements:

Ability to lift moderately heavy objects

Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends

Ability to establish effective working relationships

Location:

Uvalde is a community of 16,000 people located in the Wintergarden region of southwest Texas, about an hour and a half from San Antonio. Much of the surrounding land is used for irrigated agriculture, although the Hill Country lies just to the north with plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. The Center has about 150 acres of land for crop research/production and houses a staff of more than 50 people with active research programs in agronomy, horticulture, breeding and genetics, plant biochemistry, plant physiology, plant pathology and wildlife disease ecology.
