The duties include but are not limited to:

  • Administers/scores/records achievement and diagnostic tests as the teacher recommends for individual students.
  • Lifts and restrains students of varying age levels and sizes.
  • Assists the students to whom assigned in such physical tasks as putting on and taking off of outerwear, moving from room to room, and using the lavatory.
  • Assists students with basic physical needs such as toileting, diapering, clothing changes, personal hygiene, feeding, or prescribed exercise.
  • Assisting students with wheelchairs, braces, and other appliances and equipment.
  • Reads to and listens to student read, and participates in other forms of oral communication with students.
  • Performs simple errands and tasks for students such as sharpening pencils, carrying lunch tray and similar tasks.
  • Works with individual students and/or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing materials or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
  • Assists with individuals and groups of handicapped students to control behavior and assist with instruction.
  • Accompanies the students to whom assigned when boarding and exiting the bus, or when trips to the office or school nurse are necessary.
  • Establishes as fully as possible a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the students without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement.
  • Serves as a resource person if and when requested to the student personnel evaluation team conferring about one of the students to whom assigned.
  • Assists the teacher in supervising students while they are on the playground, entering and leaving the building, and in the cafeteria.
  • Checks and records student attendance, assists students in the library, media center, or computer lab when needed.
  • Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and make-up work, as assigned by the teacher.
  • Alerts the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  • Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Maintains high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
  • Participates in in-service training programs as assigned.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by the Administration and the Supervising Teacher.
QUALIFICATIONS: * Successful completion of at least 48 semester hours of study at an institution of higher education that was appropriately accredited per the Alabama State Department of Education at the time the courses were taken; OR
  • An Associate\'s Degree or higher documented on an official transcript from an institution of higher education that was appropriately accredited per the Alabama State Department of Education at the time the degree was earned; OR
  • A passing score of 3 or higher on the state-prescribed WorkKeys Assessments. The tests currently required are Applied Math, Work Place Documents and Business Writing.
Official Transcripts and Score Reports documenting successful completion of all education requirements will be required prior to beginning work in the position.

Duty Days 187

Salary Range: From/To Beginning pay - $23,666.00.

**Applicants selected for classified positions must undergo (or have undergone) an ABI/FBI criminal history background check (fingerprinting administered through sites selected and approved by the MCPSS and State of Alabama Education Department) and be declared suitable and fit to teach under state law. Applicants selected must also pass a drug-screening test via forms provided by Human Resources during the selection process.**
