The Special Education Paraprofessional plays a crucial role in supporting students with diverse learning needs within the educational environment. This position involves working closely with teachers and other staff to facilitate the academic and social development of students with disabilities, including those with autism and developmental disabilities. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for education, a strong understanding of childhood development, and the ability to implement individualized education plans (IEPs) effectively.
Responsibilities
Assist teachers in implementing lesson plans and adapting curriculum to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
Support students in their daily activities, ensuring they are engaged and participating in classroom learning.
Provide one-on-one or small group instruction to reinforce skills in literacy, math, and other subjects.
Help manage classroom behavior by implementing behavior management strategies as outlined in IEPs.
Foster an inclusive environment by promoting positive interactions among students.
Document student progress and communicate effectively with teachers regarding student needs and achievements.
Assist in the development of educational materials and resources tailored to individual learning styles.
Support students during transitions between activities and throughout the school day.
Participate in training sessions related to special education practices, including communication techniques such as American Sign Language.
Qualifications
Experience working with children in educational or childcare settings is essential.
Familiarity with special education practices, including IEPs, behavior management, and curriculum development is preferred.
Background in early childhood education or childhood development is advantageous.
Knowledge of teaching strategies for students with autism or developmental disabilities is highly desirable.
Strong communication skills to effectively interact with students, teachers, and parents.
Classroom management experience is beneficial for maintaining a productive learning environment.
Understanding of literacy education and math concepts relevant to early learners is a plus.
Experience with Montessori methods or preschool settings can enhance the candidate's profile.
