GEO Prep Academy of Baton Rouge is a tuition-free, public charter school that serves students in grades K-12. Our dedicated faculty and staff are committed to providing an outstanding education for students each day as they transition from elementary to middle school to high school and COLLEGE. Our teaching methods are designed using Tier 1 curriculum in K-12, a blended learning model in elementary through high school, and an Early College high school model. We are a TAP school!

DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION:

The Director of Special Education will lead and oversee all aspects of special education services within our educational institution. This role is crucial in ensuring that students with diverse learning needs receive the support and resources necessary to achieve academic success. The Director of Special Education is responsible for providing strategic direction, implementing best practices, and collaborating with stakeholders to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

TERM:

12-month (year-round) position.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:

The Director of Special Education will perform the following duties:

  • Develop and implement innovative strategies to enhance special education programs and services, promoting academic growth and independence for students with disabilities.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate special education staff members, including teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and review of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other stakeholders to establish meaningful and achievable goals for each student.
  • Coordinate the evaluation and assessment process to identify students who may be eligible for special education services.
  • Ensure that evaluation procedures are comprehensive, culturally responsive, and conducted in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Serve as a liaison between the special education department, administrators, teachers, support staff, parents, and external agencies.
  • Facilitate collaboration and communication to promote a team-based approach to supporting students with disabilities.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to special education, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Stay informed about changes in legislation and legal requirements, providing guidance and training to staff as needed.
  • Manage the allocation of resources, including personnel, budget, and materials, to support the delivery of high-quality special education services.
  • Advocate for additional resources and funding to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities.
  • Accepts other duties as may be assigned which are related to the scope of the job and outlined in their key performance indicators.
Physical Demands:

While the position is an office-based role involving tasks such as developing, implementing, and providing training, the Director of Special Education also frequently visits schools and attends meetings both locally and outside the region. This aspect of the job requires mobility and the ability to travel, adapt to various educational and stakeholder environments, and engage with a wide range of educational professionals.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master\'s degree in special education, educational leadership, or a related field
  • Valid Louisiana state certification in special education administration
  • Demonstrated experience in special education leadership roles, with a deep understanding of best practices and evidence-
based interventions.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations governing special education services.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and implement innovative initiatives to improve outcomes for students
with disabilities.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and the success of all students, regardless of ability or background.
