Job Description




The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Department of Human Services (DHS) merged on July 1, 2022, to form one agency, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). HHS, Family Well-Being and Protection Division, is seeking a Social Work Supervisor.

:

  • This position supervises workers based in Woodbury and nearby Counties who provide Child Welfare services to children and families needing family-centered services, out of home placement, as well as having protective service needs. This position will supervise life of the case - meaning it will supervise both child protective workers and social work case managers.
  • Staff supervised by this position include protective assessment workers responsible for completing child and dependent adult assessments in surrounding counties. The supervisor assigns cases, oversees workers\' initial assessments of safety and risk, and assists workers in determining any needed short-term interventions for the family.
  • This supervisor will also work with staff responsible for the assessment of protection and treatment needs of children in their family home, relative placements, as well as the Department\'s custody. Workers are also responsible for making legal recommendations to Juvenile Court on behalf of those children.
  • The position has administrative responsibilities for hiring, training, assigning work, monitoring performance, taking necessary disciplinary action, and conducting first step grievances.
  • Some of the case supervision responsibilities include providing consultation to social work case managers, facilitating community collaboration on cases, handling after hours crises, and monitoring compliance with court orders.
  • The position must assure that complaints about employees or the unit are handled promptly; performs public relations and speaks to community groups as needed; maintains required records; gathers and analyzes data as requested; assures budgetary compliance where required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited four year college and experience equal to four years of full-time work in a social work capacity in a public or private agency;

OR professional experience in a social work capacity may be substituted for the required education on the basis of one year of qualifying experience for each thirty semester hours of education;

OR a Bachelor\'s degree in social work from an accredited four year college or university and experience equal to three years of full-time experience in a social work capacity in a public or private agency;

OR a Master\'s degree in social work from an accredited college or university and experience equal to one year of full-time work in a social work capacity in a public or private agency;

OR any equivalent combination of graduate education in the social or behavioral sciences from an accredited college or university and qualifying experience up to a maximum of thirty semester hours for one year of the required experience;

OR employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to 24 months of full-time work as a Social Worker 2, or 12 months as a Social Worker 3/4 or Social Work Supervisor 1 or any combination of the above equaling 24 months shall be considered as qualified.
