Small Group Ap Physics Instructor (contract, Part Time)

Brooklyn, NY, US, United States

Job Description

About To Ivy Advance Inc

To Ivy Advance Inc is a Brooklyn-based education company serving more than 300 students every year. We are committed to delivering high-quality, evidence-based, and result-oriented education through small-group and individualized instruction. Our programs emphasize deep conceptual understanding, strong problem-solving skills, and long-term academic growth.

Teachers at To Ivy Advance Inc have significant flexibility to develop and adapt their own materials, strategies, and approaches based on what they believe will be most helpful for their students. Our department policies are highly supportive of instructors, prioritizing professional autonomy, open communication, and collaborative problem-solving.

We are seeking an experienced and engaging AP Physics 1 Instructor to lead a small-group course that prepares high school students for success in their AP Physics 1 class and exam.

Position Overview

The AP Physics 1 Instructor will teach a 4-month small-group course that meets once a week on Sunday mornings from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM at our Brooklyn center. You will work with a consistent small group of students (typically up to 3 students) and guide them through key AP Physics 1 topics, problem-solving strategies, and exam-style questions.

This role is ideal for someone who:?

Loves teaching physics conceptually, not just "plug and chug." Enjoys working with motivated high school students in a small-group setting. Understands the expectations and structure of the AP Physics 1 exam. Appreciates having flexibility in curriculum design and instructional methods, while being supported by a strong academic team.
This is a contract position with the potential for future courses (AP Physics C, SAT/ACT, or other AP subjects) depending on fit and interest.

Responsibilities

Instruction & Lesson Planning Plan and deliver weekly 2-hour in-person lessons aligned with the AP Physics 1 curriculum and College Board expectations. Break down challenging topics (kinematics, dynamics, circular motion, energy, momentum, rotational motion, simple harmonic motion, waves, electricity, etc.) into clear, accessible explanations. Incorporate a mix of conceptual discussion, worked examples, practice problems, and exam-style questions (MCQ and FRQ). Use your professional judgment and creativity to design lessons, examples, and activities that best fit your students' needs. Student Support & Assessment Assign and review weekly practice problems, including AP-style questions, and give students targeted feedback. Regularly check for understanding and adjust pacing based on student needs. Track student progress throughout the course and identify areas for additional support. Communication & Professionalism Arrive on time and be prepared for each session (materials ready, problems selected, lesson plan organized). Provide brief updates (as needed) to the program coordinator and, when appropriate, to parents about student engagement and progress. Maintain a positive, encouraging classroom environment that still holds students to high academic expectations. Collaborate with a supportive department that values teacher input and is responsive to instructional needs and suggestions. Curriculum & Collaboration Work with the program director to align content with overall course goals and schedule (e.g., topic sequence, review sessions, mock exam timing). Share feedback and insights after the course about what worked well and what can be improved for future cohorts.

Qualifications (Required)

Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a closely related STEM field. Strong content knowledge in high school and introductory college-level physics, especially topics covered in AP Physics 1. Prior teaching or tutoring experience with high school students (classroom, small-group, or 1:1). Familiarity with the AP Physics 1 exam format, including typical question styles, calculator policies, and scoring expectations. Ability to explain concepts clearly using multiple representations (verbal, algebraic, graphical, and conceptual) and to scaffold difficult problems. Reliable Sunday morning availability in Brooklyn for the full 4-month duration of the course (January 3 to May 3). Legally authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience teaching or tutoring AP Physics 1 specifically, or preparing students for the AP exam. Experience working with NYC high school students and familiarity with local school curricula (Regents, honors, etc.). Teaching certification in Physics or Science (NY or other states) is a plus, but not required. Experience incorporating inquiry-based activities, demos, or data analysis into physics instruction.

Schedule & Commitment

Course Dates: January 3 - May 3?Class Time: Sundays, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM (in-person)?Prep Time: Additional time each week for lesson planning, material preparation, and grading/feedback.?Instructors are expected to commit to all sessions for the duration of the course, except in emergencies.
