Position Summary

The Sleep Away Unit Leader supports the Girl Scouts of Connecticut's mission by creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging camp experience for all campers. This position is responsible for coordinating and delivering high-quality unit programs, supervising unit staff, and ensuring the well-being of campers. The Unit Leader upholds all State Licensing Regulations, ACA Standards, Girl Scout Activity Checkpoints, and GSOFCT Volunteer Essentials while promoting age-appropriate, progression-based outdoor experiences.


Essential Responsibilities

Program Leadership




Plan, coordinate, and deliver daily unit activities that support camp themes and Girl Scout program outcomes. Ensure activities reflect the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) and foster camper engagement, skill-building, and youth-led opportunities. Support all-camp programs, special events, and camp traditions.

Camper & Staff Supervision




Supervise assigned campers and ensure their emotional and physical safety at all times. Lead and support unit staff by delegating responsibilities, setting expectations, and modeling positive leadership. Assist with the development of staff schedules and coverage plans. Maintain professional relationships and positive role-model behavior.

Health & Safety




Uphold all safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and risk management protocols. Maintain a fully stocked unit first aid kit and ensure accessibility. Communicate regularly with the Director of First Aid regarding camper or staff health concerns. Complete accident, incident, and behavior reports promptly and accurately.

Administrative Responsibilities




Maintain accurate records including attendance, badge tracking, activity logs, and incident documentation. Report facility or equipment repairs to camp administration. Participate in all staff meetings, debriefs, and trainings. Support opening and closing procedures for the camp season. Assist with evening and overnight duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Competencies

Minimum age:

20 years old

. Ability to work effectively with diverse campers and staff, fostering a culture of inclusion and respect. Strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain organization in a dynamic environment. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., work in varied outdoor conditions, and walk on uneven terrain. Experience engaging youth in outdoor and Girl Scout programs preferred.

Education & Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of at least one year of higher education preferred. Resident Advisor or similar residential leadership experience preferred. Previous experience supervising youth or staff in an outdoor, camp, or recreation setting.

Certifications


------------------


Current First Aid/CPR/AED certifications required, or willingness to obtain upon hire. Medication Administration certification preferred; may be obtained during staff training.
