Site Nursery Manager

Job Description


Responsible for safe and efficient operation of nursery and for delivery of high performing seedlings for timberlands operations and external customers. Work with lead team to set and execute safety, operations, quality, environmental and financial goals for nursery operations. Lead team of salaried, hourly, and contract employees. Oversee a bareroot seedling nursery. Provide daily leadership and supervision of crews engaged in seedling production, including sowing, transplanting, irrigation, growing, inventory, frost protection, harvest packing and shipping, and maintenance. Prioritize, plan, implement, and manage activities to meet targets and deadlines; balance resources to ensure improvement in safety, quality, production and costs; and manage activities against annual budget.

Position is in Aurora, Oregon. Limited telecommuting permitted only during seasonal slow periods.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s or foreign equivalent degree in Forestry, Agronomy, Horticulture, Agriculture or a field related to natural resources.
  • Five years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience in managing forest nursery facility operations including farming practices, equipment and soils required to grow, harvest, pack, and ship high quality seedlings to customers; managing forest nursery financial operations including budgeting, crop price forecasting, capital purchase planning, purchasing, and inventory;
  • Managing and delivering projects, including conceptualization, design finalization with engineers and other design professionals, vendor bidding, creation of vendor work agreements, and vendor budgeting; managing forest nursery staff at all levels from professional supervisors to hourly production employees, including task assignment, goal setting, evaluation, and development planning;
  • Negotiating labor agreements with contractors and managing their performance to contract specifications.
  • Experience must include two years of use of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and production management software such as Argos Abecas. Experience may be gained concurrently.
