This position installs, maintains, and repairs traffic signal systems, streetlights, and other electrical components for roadways throughout the City.
Essential Job Functions

Troubleshoots and tests signal controllers, conflict monitors, and related systems to ensure safe and efficient traffic operations.
Installs new and upgrades existing computerized traffic signal controls, including control cabinets, signal cables, communication cables, span wire, various types of signal heads, and pedestrian signal systems.
Conducts preventive maintenance and inspections on traffic signals and school zone beacons to ensure proper operation and public safety.
Participates in training and cross-training to learn standard operating procedures, safety practices, and new technologies in traffic signal operations.
Assists in programming and configuring traffic signal controllers with minimal guidance, which requires deeper system knowledge.
Troubleshoots and resolves issues independently related to signal timing, loop detectors, communication failures, wiring problems, and controller malfunctions using testing equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, and multimeters. Expected to perform preventive maintenance and installations with minimal supervision.
Operates aerial bucket truck to install and/or repair overhead cables, traffic signals, and streetlights.
Maintains signalized intersections, street flashers systems, and school flasher systems; maintains highway and streetlights; maintains park lights and electrical outlets.
Reads and interprets electrical schematics, signal layout diagrams, and intersection plans to support installation and repair work.
Maintains accurate records of inspections, repairs, work orders, inventory, and material usage in tracking systems or work logs.
Installs temporary traffic control devices at work sites.
Responds to service calls and emergencies involving traffic signal outages, knockdowns, or malfunctions during and outside of normal work hours.
Responsible for after-hours emergency calls as part of on-call responsibilities.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Requires an Associate or Technical Degree with three years of journey-level residential, commercial, and industrial electrical experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
Certification through the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA), Level 1 preferred.

MINIMUM STANDARDS:
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Traffic Engineering Superintendent. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the National Electric Code, the Georgia Electric Code, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, state department of transportation traffic signal guidelines, city policies and procedures, and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties connected to installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment. Considerable analytical ability is needed to select, evaluate, and interpret data from several sources; interpretation of guidelines, policies, and procedures is required. Inclement weather conditions, heavy traffic, and frequent technology changes contribute to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to participate in the installation and maintenance of traffic signal and streetlight systems. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficiency and safety of city roadways.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Regular contact within the department and other departments, outside agencies, and the general public (supplying or seeking information) on specialized matters.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The work frequently climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color. This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors, where the employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.
