The Shipping & Receiving Trainee is an entry-level role designed to develop foundational skills in warehouse, shipping, and receiving operations. This position supports daily material movement, inventory accuracy, and outbound/inbound logistics while learning safe material handling practices, documentation requirements, and company systems. The trainee works under close supervision with structured on-the-job training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Shipping Support
Assist with preparing outbound shipments, including staging, labeling, and packaging materials
Learn to verify shipping documentation (packing slips, bills of lading, carrier paperwork)
Support loading operations using forklifts, cranes, or pallet jacks (training provided)
Ensure shipments are accurate, complete, and properly secured
Opportunity to cross-train within the Shipping areas.
Receiving Support
Assist with unloading inbound materials and verifying quantities against purchase orders
Help inspect incoming materials for visible damage or discrepancies
Learn proper receiving procedures, including documentation and material identification
Assist with directing materials to appropriate storage or production areas
Inventory & Warehouse Operations
Support inventory accuracy through counting, tagging, and proper storage practices
Learn warehouse layout, material flow, and stock locations
Assist with housekeeping, organization, and maintaining clear aisles and work areas
Follow FIFO and material traceability requirements, as applicable
Safety & Compliance
Follow all safety rules, PPE requirements, and material handling procedures
Participate in safety training (forklift, crane, hazmat awareness if applicable)
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
Learn company policies related to shipping, receiving, and inventory control
Qualifications
Required
High school diploma or GED required
Willingness to learn shipping, receiving, and warehouse operations
Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
Basic math and reading skills
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand/walk for extended periods
Preferred
Prior warehouse, manufacturing, or logistics experience (not required)
Forklift or material handling experience
Familiarity with basic computer systems
Work Environment
Manufacturing or warehouse setting
Exposure to moving equipment, industrial materials, and varying temperatures
May require overtime, shift work, or weekend hours based on operational needs
Physical Requirements
Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting
Ability to safely operate material handling equipment after training
