Performs intermediate technical work performing pre-licensed law enforcement activities designed for individuals pursuing a career as a Deputy Sheriff. Sheriff Office Cadets perform non-sworn duties in support of the Sheriff's Office while completing the required education, training, and licensing necessary to become a sworn peace officer. This position provides exposure to various divisions within the agency and prepares cadets for future law enforcement responsibilities. Work is performed under the general direction of the Sergeant.

Planning to enter a POST-recognized law enforcement program or skills training course within a defined timeframe.
Must be able to attend and successfully complete all required academic courses at Hennepin Technical College and be able to technically and physically complete all skills necessary to perform the duties of a Deputy Sheriff.
Must be able to document all activity through preparation of reports and logs.
Assists the Sheriff's Office with receiving and responding to non-emergency calls.
Display the ability to work collaboratively with deputies, staff, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications & Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to learn principles, theories, and concepts of law enforcement, investigations, criminal justice; Ability to learn local, State, and Federal laws, regulations, and codes relating to law enforcement activities; Ability to study, read and interpret approved Sheriff's Office practices, procedure, and techniques; Ability to gain an understanding of the streets and highways and geography of Wright County; Ability to learn first aid and emergency medical response; develop skills in assessing situations quickly and accurately and implementing responses and course of action to resolve serious/major incidents within established guidelines; use of standard office equipment, including computer and software programs; Ability to learn verbal and written communication skills effectively; Possess interpersonal communication skills and receive work direction, maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and supervisors; ability to learn computer systems specific to the County and Sheriff's Office; ability learn how to operate and use emergency vehicles, handgun, shotgun, baton, handcuffs, chemical munitions, first aid kit, pagers, bolt cutters, portable breath tester, radar units, varda alarms, intoxilyzers, gas guns, gas masks, special firearms, night vision equipment, body armor, traffic control vest, riot helmet, and surveillance equipment; learn how to perform physical tasks while under emotional stress; ability to learn to use practical judgment in potentially dangerous, life threatening situations; ability to learn to sufficiently defend self and others in a physical encounter; ability to learn to use firearms and other types of law enforcement equipment; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to learn to effectively deal with hostile, potentially violent individuals and de-escalate dangerous behavior; ability to work long hours which may include rotating shifts; ability to pay attention to detail and effectively organize time and anticipate, plan and successfully respond to changing circumstances, pressure and deadlines; ability to perform all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices; ability to undergo strenuous physical and academic training and conditioning; ability to communicate courteously and professionally while maintaining positive working relationships with others when carrying out all job functions.
Education and Experience
Candidates must be 18 years of age and have completed a two- or four-year degree in any discipline to be eligible to apply for this position.
Special Requirements
Must be able to pass a medical evaluation, physical assessment screening, and psychological evaluation.
Must be able to pass a background check and not have been convicted of any crime listed in MN Rule 6700.0700.
A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is also required upon hire and throughout career.
Eligible candidates must not be enrolled in or have completed the Minnesota Skills program or taken and passed the Minnesota POST exam or other state's equivalent.
