We are seeking a Senior Scientist to join the Translational Pathology group in Oncology R&D. You will be at the forefront of the evolution of translational science and cancer biomarker development at AstraZeneca! Major Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

In this role you will have the opportunity to participate in the establishment of a new laboratory at the AstraZeneca Boston, USA site. As part of this role, you will be working with our expanding Translational Genomics and Haematology teams to provide histology and pathology support. Our Global Genomics team uses bulk and single cell DNA and RNA sequencing methods along with a variety of spatial technologies to match the right patient to the right drug and to support precision oncology approaches for the AstraZeneca Oncology pipeline. This role will require you to use the best available science, technology and digital AI to work alongside our genomics team and translational pathologists, bridging the two teams. As well as ensuring delivery of high-quality tissue specimens with tumor annotations for greater precision of nucleic acid extraction, including support of our single cell applications.

Skills and experience:

  • BSc/MSc degree in a relevant science subject and 2 years of experience in industry/a relevant field
  • Experience working with human tissue samples and tissue-based histopathology methods, including microtomy skills.
  • Experienced in microscopy and/or digital slide scanning, particularly examination of human pathology samples.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team environment and multi-task in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Familiarity with and commitment to safe laboratory practices.
  • Ability to lead from the bench in problem solving and the development of innovative solutions.
Desirable/Advantageous \xe2\x80\x93 Although training will be given, experience in the following areas would provide a distinct advantage:
  • PhD in a relevant field
  • Knowledge of cancer biology and associated mutational drivers/ tumour suppressors.
  • Familiarity with Next Generation Sequencing techniques such as whole exome/genome sequencing, large pan-cancer enrichment panels and whole transcriptome.
  • Experience extracting nucleic acids from formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissues.
  • Experience in macro-dissection of tissue from histology slides.
  • Experience with manual and/or automated immunohistochemistry (IHC) or immunofluorescence (IF).
  • Experience in digital image analysis.
  • Experience in flow cytometry
  • Peer-reviewed publications in the field of translational pathology or cancer biology.
  • Experience working with a LIMS and electronic lab notebook.
