Description
We are seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join our Gen AI & Strategic Initiatives team that spans our Amazon Luna and Prime Gaming business. You will be a critical early member as we drive towards two key areas of AI integration 1) to create new types of Gen AI native games and gameplay experiences and 2) to enhance productivity of our internal team through the adoption of best practices and tools as well as the creation of agents.
As our Senior AI/ML Engineer, you will design, architect, and implement machine learning solutions for both external game developers as well as our internal engineering teams. You'll be a hands-on builder who creates and optimizes workflows for fine-tuning and distilling state-of-the-art foundation models (text, image, voice, etc.). Your deep understanding of the gaming and AI landscape will enable you to consult on model optimization as well as fully-scale AI systems in production.

Key job responsibilities

• Drive platform architecture decisions - Define build vs buy vs borrow frameworks to help teams architect the optimal AI stack per use case; contribute to technical design reviews and architectural decisions
• Partner directly with game developers and platform teams - Collaborate with internal and external gaming teams to understand specific use cases, translate requirements into technical solutions, and optimize foundational models through fine-tuning and distillation
• Design and implement trust and safety frameworks - Architect comprehensive safety solutions that balance model prompting, fine-tuning techniques, and built-in guardrails to ensure responsible AI deployment while maintaining optimal user experiences
• Drive performance optimization - Design core platform components that deliver minimal latency, high throughput, and cost-effective solutions at scale.
• Shape product strategy through tech insights - Engage with game developers to understand future requirements and use cases, matching that with tech trends, providing strategic input on which models and capabilities our platform should prioritize and support
• Lead internal GenAI adoption and evangelization - Champion the adoption of GenAI tools across internal teams, conduct technical workshops, and drive productivity improvements through effective implementation of AI capabilities
• Deliver end-to-end technical solutions - Own the complete lifecycle from proof-of-concept to production deployment, including model selection, customization, integration, and continuous improvement based on performance metrics
• Stay at the forefront of GenAI innovation - Monitor and evaluate emerging models, techniques, and capabilities from leading AI providers including Anthropic, OpenAI, and others; maintain strategic relationships with external partners to inform our platform roadmap
• Collaborate cross-functionally on innovation initiatives - Work closely with Applied Scientists, Product Managers, and Engineering teams to identify new opportunities, prototype novel solutions, and contribute to Amazon's broader GenAI strategy and best practices

The Amazon Luna Prime Gaming team is leveraging the power of the cloud to enable customers to experience the rich and immersive world of gaming on all of their existing devices. It represents an exciting and truly new product and business, with a high degree of innovation, and an opportunity to reach a large volume of passionate customers. The Gen AI & Strategic Initiatives team is a new cross-functional team pioneering AI-powered features that elevate gameplay and drive engagement in exciting new ways. This team works at the intersection of cloud gaming, AI, and interactive entertainment, building experiences that will change how games are discovered, developed, and played by millions.
Basic Qualifications
- 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
- 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team
- Demonstrated ability to work with large language models, multimodal models, and foundation model customization for specific use cases
- Experience designing and implementing ML pipelines, model training workflows, and automated evaluation systems
- Strong understanding of responsible AI practices, model safety, content filtering, and guardrail implementation
- Excellent communication skills with ability to translate complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders and drive technical decisions
- Strong technical fluency in Generative AI, including a deep understanding of large language models (LLMs), AI model behavior, and trade-offs (e.g., model size, latency, cost, and output quality).
- Passion for staying current with the latest developments in AI technologies, and applying those insights to real-world product challenges
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Analytics, Mathematics, Physics, Applied Sciences, or a related field
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Background in gaming, with a passion for building features that engage and delight players
- Master's degree in machine learning or related field

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $151,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $261,500/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
