This Senior Medical Coder position assigns the diagnosis and procedure codes through utilization of ICD-10-CM for diagnoses and ICD-10-PCS for medical/surgical procedures. Must determine the principal diagnosis (PDx) to assign the correct diagnosis-related group (DRG) to the inpatient stay. Abstracts data from the medical record and enters it into the hospital information abstracting system. This is a virtual, remote position that requires candidates to be highly organized, self-starters, well-versed in technical applications. Previous success in a remote environment is preferred.

Work Schedule: Sunday - Thursday or Tuesday - Saturday with set hours as established between manager and coder; may require weekend and/or holiday coverage to meet business needs as well as the possibility of mandatory overtime.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assigns accurate diagnostic and procedure codes according to clinical documentation and official coding guidelines for inpatient and/or outpatient hospital accounts
  • Coordinates with the clinical documentation and quality teams to ensure validation of Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group (MSDRG), patient safety indicators, and hospital acquired conditions are supported by physician documentation to assign appropriate coding
  • Monitors assigned work queues to ensure all records are charged in a timely matter
  • Generates coding queries for clarification regarding physician documentation as needed
  • Stays abreast of all changes in coding conventions and coding updates

Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma/GED (or higher)
  • Professional coder certification with credentialing from AHIMA and/or AAPC (RHIT, RHIA, CCA, CPC, COC, CPC-P, CCS, CIC) to be maintained annually
  • 2+ years of Acute Inpatient coding experience
  • Ability to use a PC in a Windows environment, including MS Excel and EMR systems
  • Ability to work 40 hours/week. Hours are flexible; will have the opportunity to choose between Tuesday \xe2\x80\x93 Saturday or Sunday \xe2\x80\x93 Thursday (1 weekend day is required)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with various encoder systems (eCAC, 3M, EPIC)
  • Coding experience in a trauma and/or teaching hospital with a mastery of complex procedures, Maternal/Fetal medicine, orthopedic and neurosurgery cases
