Senior Copy Specialist, Weekend Lead, The New Yorker
The Senior Copy Specialist is an agile reader with a demonstrated talent for proofreading, line editing, and querying, and possesses strong editorial instincts and news judgment. Acting as the Weekend Lead two days per week, this Senior Copy Specialist nimbly changes gears and perspectives, delegating priorities and making programming decisions with confidence, as well as editing and closing stories and overseeing newsletter deployment and home-screen updates. This is a Guild position.
Responsibilities:
Manage the daily publication schedule for the weekends, coordinating with editors, fact checkers, copy editors, photo editors, and social-media editors to insure that priorities are clear and deadlines are met, making adjustments to the schedule as necessary.
Close stories for other editors over the weekend as needed, and occasionally edit and file stories over the weekend.
Oversee newsletter deployment and home-screen updates for the weekend.
Copy-edit and proofread articles, pages, and related materials for The New Yorker, suggesting editorial improvements to grammar, style, usage, logic, sense, tone, placement, and concision, and expertly spotting typos and bad breaks on final passes.
Proofread and clean digitized stories from magazine archives, insuring that no infelicities have been introduced in the conversion process.
Suggest engaging headlines and other display copy, following SEO guidelines and editorial best practices.
Coordinate with multiple stakeholders to prepare and schedule pieces for publication in The New Yorker's content-management system.
Manage workflow and delegate responsibilities to teammates when necessary.
Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager.
Skills and Qualifications:
Five years' experience as a copy editor or proofreader.
Strong editorial instincts, writing skills, and news judgment.
An eye for detail, an ear for voice.
Good communication skills.
Excellent time-management skills.
The ability to meet deadlines while handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Comfort learning new editorial systems.
Experience working with a content-management system (such as Wordpress) for publishing Web content.
Experience working with Google Docs and InCopy.
Familiarity with the history, style, and values of The New Yorker.
Willingness to work weekends, plus some early mornings, nights, and holidays.
The expected base salary range for this position is from $85,000 - $95,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
