Organizational Unit Overview

The Office of Institutional Planning, Assessment, and Research [IPAR] is directed by the Associate Provost for IPAR, who reports to the Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. IPAR collects, analyzes, warehouses, and disseminates data about East Carolina University. IPAR facilitates and enhances university-wide strategic and operational planning, assessment, evaluation, and research activities to ensure compliance with accreditation standards and support institutional decision-making and continuous improvement. IPAR is the University\'s primary contact with The University of North Carolina System Office, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on College (SACSCOC), and other external constituencies in meeting the data, reporting, and compliance requirements established by these various agencies/bodies.
Job Duties

The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst reports primarily to the Associate Director for Institutional Research. The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst assumes responsibility for assignments that support the planning, assessment, and research functions in IPAR; the scope of the position extends from IPAR to the entire University community. The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst plays a key role in data reporting and visualization; data management and quality; and business intelligence training, education, and promotion at the University. The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst also supports UNC System data marts and serves in a leadership role on data mart cross functional teams.

Data Reporting and Visualization - 30%

  • Design, develop, and deploy business intelligence reports (using Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services) and dashboards (using Microsoft Power BI) to inform decision-makers at the University and to communicate analytical and longitudinal findings to internal and external end users effectively.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and clients, both internal and external to IPAR, to identify business requirements and translate them into business intelligence solutions.
  • Stay updated on best practices and emerging technologies in higher education business intelligence, data visualization, and analytics.
Data Management and Quality - 30%
  • Extract and analyze complex datasets from the University\'s data warehouse by writing SQL queries and developing dashboard data models.
  • Collaborate with Information Technology and Computing Services (ITCS) staff to 1) create and maintain crosswalks and code descriptions needed for longitudinal and/or regulatory reporting, 2) consult on the development of new reporting views and ETL (extract, transform, load) processes in the University data warehouse, and 3) consult on the design and timing of institutional data snapshots in the University data warehouse.
  • Create and maintain data quality reports for regular monitoring. Collaborate with data stewards, data custodians, and other stakeholders to resolve data quality issues and implement preventive measures.
  • Conduct assessments of data quality by identifying discrepancies, errors, and inconsistencies within datasets to be used in dashboards, data models, research projects, or statistical modeling conducted by IPAR staff and/or institutional research partners.
Business Intelligence Training, Education, and Promotion - 20%
  • Conduct engaging and interactive training, educational, and/or promotional sessions for end users, both in-person and virtually as appropriate, on IPAR business intelligence products.
  • Provide one-on-one coaching and support on IPAR business intelligence products to end users as needed, addressing their specific questions and challenges.
  • Create and maintain training materials, documentation, and user guides on IPAR business intelligence products to support ongoing learning among end users.
UNC System Office Human Resources Data Mart Leadership - 15%
  • Serve as the ECU representative to the UNC System Office on the Human Resources Data Mart (HRDM).
  • Provide leadership for the cross-functional team responsible for submitting accurate, complete, and timely data on ECU faculty and staff to the UNC System Office via the HRDM.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS), ITCS, and UNC System Office staff to ensure HRDM upgrades are tested and implemented according to specified requirements.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources, EHRA Personnel Administration, and other functional offices to actively monitor and correct missing or erroneous data on ECU faculty and staff prior to HRDM submission due dates.
Other - 5%
  • This position will cultivate positive and productive relationships with other departments and demonstrate creativity in recommending solutions for user reporting needs. This position will represent IPAR on various campus committees or working/advisory groups aligned with areas of expertise. Working with faculty, staff, and student data necessitates the utmost care in data security and confidentiality. This position will be knowledgeable of and adhere to policies and procedures related to data security.
This position is contingent upon available funding.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Post-Baccalaureate degree required; will accept a bachelor\'s degree and two or more years of relevant experience in substitution.
  • Proficiency in BI tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or equivalent.
  • SQL skills and experience working with large datasets.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience conveying complex findings to non-technical stakeholders.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Ellucian Banner and Operational Data Store (ODS).
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services, and Oracle database environments.
  • Strong project management skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
