Job Summary

Typical Hiring Range: $15.00 - $17.00 hourly (salary to be commensurate with qualifications)


This position is located at Bear Creek Nature Center.


This position has an anticipated work schedule of Monday\xe2\x80\x93 Saturday, 8:00am \xe2\x80\x93 4:30pm (with occasional evenings), subject to change. Under FLSA guidelines, this position is non-exempt.

Under direct supervision of the Nature Center Supervisor, assists in providing interpretive services within a nature center and regional park to promote public understanding, enjoyment and appreciation of natural areas, interpretive programs and parks.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
  • Provides public information services, including orientation to the public regarding regional parks and trails; greets visitors and receives incoming calls; provides natural and cultural history information and roving interpretive services.
  • Leads and assists with staff or volunteer-led interpretive programs and presentations.
  • Assists with various special projects/events on the behalf of the Recreation & Cultural Services Division.
  • Assists in the maintenance of displays and exhibits and other nature center facilities, equipment and materials; researches, designs, develops and assembles interpretive exhibits, programs, media and materials.
  • Leads programs for a wide variety of audiences from toddlers to adults.
  • Leads Environmental Education programs for elementary and middle school students. Assists with the organization and presentation of nature day-camps.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of regional natural and cultural history, interpretive principles, media and techniques.
  • Strong understanding of the professional commitment to the position and the nature centers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers and the public. Ability to stimulate interest and lead people in various interpretive activities in the nature center and outside on the trails.
  • Ability to assume assignments and complete them with adequate results.
  • Ability to use various computer programs, including word processing, databases and desktop publishing software; Microsoft Office proficiency preferred.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Required Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent education.
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor\'s degree in parks, recreation, environmental studies or related field.
  • Minimum six months experience working with interpretive/environmental education program.
Licenses/Certificates:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver\'s license.
Pre- Employment Requirements:
  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, and drug screen.

Work Conditions
Duties are performed in an office environment, work room and outside in the field year round in inclement weather conditions; some travel may be required. Field work may involve transverse/negotiating undeveloped, rugged terrain. Required to work Saturdays; may be required to work occasional evenings. This is a temporary position typically not to exceed five months.
