The School Resource Officer (SRO) serves as a sworn law enforcement officer assigned to the school campus to promote safety, deter criminal behavior, and foster positive relationships between law enforcement, students, and staff. The SRO provides preventive, educational, and response services, ensuring a safe and secure learning environment consistent with local law enforcement and school district policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain a visible and active presence on campus to deter misconduct, unauthorized visitors, and criminal activity.
Protect the safety and welfare of students, staff, and visitors through patrols, surveillance, and emergency response.
Conduct investigations of criminal or suspicious activity occurring on school property, in collaboration with local police agencies.
Serve as a liaison between the school and law enforcement, facilitating communication and cooperation.
Assist in the development and implementation of safety plans, emergency drills, and threat-assessment protocols.
Provide educational presentations on topics such as drug prevention, cyber safety, conflict resolution, and legal awareness.
Support restorative and preventive approaches to discipline, emphasizing student support and de-escalation when possible.
Participate in crisis intervention and emergency response, including lockdowns, evacuations, and first aid.
Attend staff meetings and contribute to school safety teams and student support committees.
Maintain accurate incident and activity reports in accordance with departmental standards.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, including FERPA and confidentiality requirements, when interacting with students and staff.
All other duties as assigned by supervisor(s).
Minimum Qualifications

Certification as a law enforcement officer by the state's governing body (e.g., Indiana Law Enforcement Academy).
Minimum of three years of law enforcement experience, preferably with youth, schools, or community policing.
Demonstrated training or experience in juvenile law, de-escalation, threat assessment, and school safety procedures.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to build trust and rapport with students and staff.
Ability to respond effectively in emergencies and exercise sound judgment under pressure.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience as a School Resource Officer or community policing officer.
Completion of NASRO (National Association of School Resource Officers) certification or equivalent training.
Knowledge of child development, school law, and trauma-informed practices.
Familiarity with restorative justice and school discipline frameworks.
Working Conditions
----------------------
Work is performed primarily on a school campus during regular hours, with occasional evening or weekend assignments for events.
Shift hours 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
188 work days per school year. (Additional earning opportunity during summer school).
Physical demands include walking, standing, and responding to emergencies.
