Osawatomie State Hospital is licensed by the State of Kansas to provide care and treatment for adults diagnosed with psychiatric disorders regardless of ability to pay. There are currently two hospitals on the Osawatomie campus in Miami county: Osawatomie State Hospital (OSH) and Adair Acute Care (AAC). Adair Acute Care are a 60-bed facility, certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.


Position is located at Osawatomie State Hospital, days/hours may vary. This position may require you to work weekends. A negative drug screen is required as a condition of employment.


All employees are expected to work in a harmonious and cooperative fashion with other staff to provide efficient and effective customer service: to use free time as available to assist other staff in the completion of work assignments and perform other tasks as needed; to contribute to a positive work environment through a positive, helpful, courteous demeanor towards staff, customers, and the general public; and to adhere to appropriate standards of conduct regarding the use of leave, reports to work on time and in the designated fashion.


The purpose of the Safety and Security Officer I position is to provide fire protection for patients, staff, and visitors. It directs the enforcement of Interim Life Safety Codes, Fire safety inspections, ensures compliance with all rules and regulations from the State Fire Marshall Office, CMS, and Joint Commission. This position performs numerous duties and assignments in support of hospital operations. Telephone operator, 911 operators, conducts searches at the Admissions, First Responder duties, de-escalate physical confrontations, operates the hospital Visitor Center, serves as an Admissions Clerk when coverage is needed, escort patients, conducts physical security inspections of all 50 hospital buildings, assists nursing with administration of patient meds, patrols grounds, enforces traffic codes, maintains hospital Operations Log, and other duties as assigned by supervisor. It reports to the Shift Supervisor and acts as a Fire Responder for any/ all emergencies.


The essential functions of this position require physical strength to frequently push, pull, twist, bend, squat, walk, stand for extended periods of time, lift and/or restrain residents with or without assistance and respond to aggressive resident behavior with specific, trained techniques. Must be able to observe and respond to residents in distress.


Osawatomie State Hospital Adair Acute Care is funded in part by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and is subject to requirements bestowed by Federal and State levels of government conditions of participation.


Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary: The Security Officer ensures a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors at Osawatomie State Hospital. This role involves patrolling hospital grounds, responding to emergencies, assisting with patient safety, conducting fire and safety inspections, and enforcing hospital policies. Security Officers work collaboratively with law enforcement, hospital staff, and patients to maintain a therapeutic and secure environment.


Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Inspect hospital buildings for fire and safety compliance; implement corrective actions.
Patrol hospital campus and respond to security or safety incidents.
Assist with emergency preparedness drills and respond to fire alarms, codes, or crises.
Intervene in patient-related incidents to ensure safety of all involved.
Escort and transport patients during admissions and discharges.
Enforce hospital policies, including visitor rules, traffic, and dress code.
Investigate crimes, secure scenes, and collaborate with law enforcement when needed.
Complete reports, documentation, and required training certifications.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalency and valid Kansas Driver's license
Preferred Qualifications: Prior firefighter experience and prior crisis management experience.
Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Positions in this class require that at the time of appointment the selected candidate must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services. Persons hired must also pass a law enforcement security clearance in compliance with policies of the Department of Aging and Disability Services.
