Required qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a related field (bioinformatics, computational biology, data science, epidemiology and at least 2 years of related work experience or a combination of relevant education and work experience totaling 6 years. Experience analyzing sequence-based datasets, including 16S microbiome datasets Experience developing dashboards, in particular Shiny apps Ability to troubleshoot and make progress independently Strong intra-team communication skills


Preferred qualifications:

Master's degree in a related field (bioinformatics, computational biology, data science, epidemiology Successful candidates will combine strong computational and statistical skills with a solid understanding of biological systems. Key competencies include proficiency in bioinformatics and data science methods, experience with sequence-based analyses and workflow development, fluency in programming and version-controlled research practices, and the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. The role requires independence, rigor, and a commitment to reproducible science, enabling the lab and department to generate high-quality, impactful research outputs.

About the Job:

This is a temporary, 12 month position wth the possibility of continuation if funding is available.


The Bioinformatician will play a central role in advancing computational research in the Noyes Lab within the University of Minnesota by designing, implementing, and maintaining analytical workflows for high-throughput sequencing and other complex biological datasets. The purpose of this position is to translate large, heterogeneous data streams into reproducible, biologically meaningful insights that support the lab's research programs in microbiology, genomics, and infectious disease ecology, while contributing to the broader research and training mission of the department.



Job Duties:

75% - Analyze sequence-based biological datasets

Use lab protocols and procedures for data management and analysis Maintain sufficient documentation of all workflows and analyses to support reproducibility and quality control Summarize analysis results, including generating figures, tables and text-based descriptions Develop and maintain code Contribute to scientific communication of results, including written and oral communications (i.e., papers and seminars) Communicate progress, challenges, opportunities and results with relevant stakeholders, both within and external to the lab


15% - Assist in training team members in data analysis and related documentation



Assist in maintaining group resources, including dataset and database management; software maintenance; data-relevant protocol updates


10% - Attend and participate in lab meetings



Attend and participate in relevant project meetings


Location and Work Environment: This position is 100% remote, with the option for in-person work if desired.



Work Schedule: This position follows a standard M-F, 9-5 work schedule, with possibility for flexible work hours upon approval of the supervisor.
