Position Summary



The Robotics & Project?Based Science Teacher is responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing innovative, hands-on instruction in robotics, research methods/writing, and project?based science. This role combines STEM education with student research literacy and emphasizes inquiry, design, collaboration, and real?world application. The teacher will support grades?6-12, align with the school's mission and culture, and fulfill all responsibilities as defined under the HSTA contract (working conditions, hours, instructional minutes, etc.)

Key Responsibilities



Develop and deliver engaging courses in: Robotics (design, build, program, test robots, participate in competitions) Research Paper?/?Student Research Methods (student?led research, writing, presentation) Project?Based Science (PBL) course that integrates biology, physics, engineering, or environmental science with real?world investigation and design. Employ project?based learning (PBL) strategies: scaffold student design cycles, promote inquiry, facilitate collaboration, and guide authentic assessment. Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners (grades?6?12, including students at varied readiness levels). Evaluate student progress with formative and summative assessments, research paper rubrics, project presentations, robotics competition performance, and lab/test data. Manage classroom/lab environment including robotics workshop, tools, materials, safety protocols, and extracurriculum competition teams or events. Collaborate with other STEM and humanities teachers to integrate robotics and research methods across disciplines. Communicate regularly with students, families, and stakeholders about course expectations, project milestones, research deadlines, competition schedules, and student progress. Serve as advisor or mentor for robotics club/team outside instructional hours (voluntary or as specified by school activities). Participate in professional development, department and school meetings, and contribute to continuous improvement of curriculum and instructional practices. Uphold the HSTA contract provisions for working conditions: preparation time, duty?free lunch, scheduling limits, non?professional duty limits.

Qualifications



Required:



Bachelor's degree in Education, Engineering, Science, Computer Science, Robotics, or related field. Valid Hawai?i teaching license (or eligible) for secondary education (grades?6?12) via the Hawai?i Teacher Standards Board (HTSB). Demonstrated experience in robotics, engineering design, student research methods, or project?based science instruction. Ability to plan and execute project?based learning and research paper courses across multiple grade levels. Strong classroom management, communication, and collaborative skills.

Preferred:



Master's degree in STEM education, Educational Technology, or a related field. Experience coaching a robotics team or leading student research competitions. Familiarity with design?thinking, coding (e.g., Python, Arduino), sensors/actuators, CAD modeling. Experience working with grades?6?12 across junior and high school levels. Experience integrating culturally responsive pedagogy and awareness of Hawai?i's place?based educational contexts.

Working Conditions & Other Information



Instructional day consistent with HSTA teacher contract: full?time teachers scheduled at no more than 35 hours per week / 7 hours per day, plus any allowed extended time or professional development hours. Preparation and planning time provided in accordance with the HSTA contract. Some after?school or weekend time may be required for robotics competitions, team meetings, field work for project?based science, or parent/student events. The position includes handling and maintenance of robotics hardware, sensors, tools, software, and student research labs--some lifting and safe?use protocols required. Salary and benefits are per HSTA salary schedule (Unit?05) and any applicable charter school supplemental agreements.
