This job contributes to Starbucks' success by operating the coffee roasting system at Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Chicago. In addition to roasting the world's finest coffee, supporting the operation with autonomous maintenance, inventory management, and engaging with customers during the roasting process is critical to our success. As a roaster operator, you will...
Operate the green and roasted coffee platforms of the Advanced Coffee Roasting System (ACRS).
Audit and document silo and system status and other quality benchmarks.
Perform troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and sanitation procedures.
Conduct internal recall investigations for products not meeting specifications.
Ensure compliance with Starbucks roast profiles.
Participates in tastings (cuppings) to develop and maintain coffee expertise.
Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
Assess current and future schedule requirements against actual loading, roasting, and packaging status. Works with supervisor to modify the roasting schedule as needed to support immediate and future packaging requirements.
Maintain records for food defense, food safety, quality, and safety processes.
Support cost reduction goals by identifying and acting upon potential roadblocks and process improvements to reduce downtime, scrap, and product not meeting specifications. Re-blends coffee in accordance with established guidelines.
Engage with customers and partners to educate and excite them about the roasting process.
Demonstrate passion for coffee and convey that excitement to customers and partners.
Operate the roasters manually to provide an 'Artisan' roasting experience. This requires roasting without controls while proactively engaging with others.
Conduct coffee education workshops for the public.
Utilize sample roasters to roast small batch coffees or to train customers on roasting progression.
Order and receive all needed materials in partnership with supervisor
Provides legendary customer service.
We'd love to hear from people with:
Operation of processing equipment using computer-based control systems (3 years)
Gathering, recording and reporting on operational and quality metrics (2 years)
Operation of manufacturing platforms (roasting, grinding, green coffee delivery or roasted coffee delivery) (2 years) - Preferred
Regulated food manufacturing environment (2 years)
Performing quality tests using analytical tools (1 year)

If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above. For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.
The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
