As a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), you are crucial in delivering exceptional patient care to individuals in critical condition. Your responsibilities in the ICU will include monitoring and providing specialized medical care to patients, collaborating with a multidisciplinary healthcare team, and maintaining a safe and comfortable environment. Your dedication and expertise are essential in ensuring the well-being and recovery of patients in this high-acuity setting.
The RN--ICU Staff Nurse shall implement the nursing process in an organized, systematic manner, including assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation, as evidenced by direct observation of the patient, continuous monitoring of lab values and results and imaging results, appropriate notification and communication with provider and other members of the care team, and complete, timely documentation in the chart. The RN is responsible to the Charge Nurse for patient care and ultimately accountable to the Unit Director.

Patient Assessment: Thoroughly assess the patient's medical conditions and continually monitor vital signs, recognizing changes and responding promptly to critical situations. Meet established standards of practice for assessment and reassessment from admission to discharge, as evidenced by appropriate documentation in the medical record.
Care Planning: Consistently plan patient care in conjunction with other disciplines to meet the goals and individualized needs of the patients. Develop and implement individualized care plans for patients, considering their unique needs, medical history, and physician orders.
Medication Administration: Administer medications, intravenous therapies, and other treatments as prescribed, and ensure accurate documentation of dosages and patient responses. Be competent in patient interventions as evidenced by safe administration of medications, treatments, procedures, infection control, and addressing changes in status to safely care for patients.
Medication Management: Safely titrate and monitor multiple medications at a time.
Evaluation: Consistently evaluate the practices of care delivered to patients and adjust care according to established standards of practice and physician's orders. Provide ongoing evaluation of patient's condition, hemodynamic stability, respiratory status, lab and imaging results, and other necessary patient-specific data.
Patient Education: Consistently educate patients and families on equipment, medications, safety, pain control, and discharge needs.
Documentation: Complete accurate and timely documentation in the medical record.
Critical Thinking: Possess essential thinking abilities to make informed and effective decisions in complex healthcare situations.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Review each other's discharges, restraint documentation, and care plan documentation each shift. Notify the Director/House Supervisor of any concerns or unresolved complaints immediately.
Environment: Maintain a clean, safe, quiet, and efficient work environment.
EMR Utilization: Exhibit competency in accessing and utilizing electronic medical records (EMR) to provide patient care.
Safety and Security: Possess the knowledge and skills to safely and appropriately fulfill job-specific responsibilities related to safety, security, emergency preparedness, control of hazardous materials, life safety, and utility systems as outlined in the hospital's environment of care plan.
Age-Specific Care: Utilize knowledge of the age-specific needs of adult patients in performing duties and responsibilities.
Equipment Proficiency: Safely utilize equipment including, but not limited to Defibrillator, Automated Blood Pressure Machine, Perform Manual Blood Pressure, Automated Wall Mounted Monitors, Central Station Monitors, Portable Monitor, Portable and Wall Suction, Glucometer, Automated SCD Pump, IV Pump, Feeding Pump, Patient Warmer, Blood/Fluid Warmer, Patient Bed, Omni-cell, wound vac, Hoyer lift.
Complex Patient Care: Care for critically ill patients with multiple co-morbidities and patients placed on 72-hour hold.
Phlebotomy: After phlebotomy training, be proficient in drawing blood for labs.
Cardiac Care: Care for cardiac patients and identify lethal cardiac dysrhythmias.
Specialty Skills: Demonstrate competency in central line care, arterial line care, IV insertion/care, and blood transfusions.
Confidentiality and Communication: Respect and maintain patient confidentiality and communicate and interact appropriately with patients, families, and visitors.
Qualifications:
Education/Skills
Graduate of a recognized and accredited non-online RN program.
Work Experience:
One year of medical/surgical nursing care is preferred.
ICU experience preferred.
