The Respiratory Therapist (RT) provides supervision, care, training, and support to individuals with developmental disabilities in alignment with established standards and procedures. This role includes delivering critical assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) while ensuring a safe, supportive, and person-centered environment.
Successful RTs demonstrate strong organizational skills, the ability to analyze situations and take effective action, clear communication, and adherence to directions and protocols. The position requires knowledge of the field, including applicable state and federal regulations (e.g., Title 17 & 22), and familiarity with partner agencies such as Regional Centers, the Department of Social Services, the Department of Developmental Services, and the State Council on Developmental Services.
In addition, effective RTs actively expand their technical expertise in areas such as dual diagnoses, Individual Program Plans (IPPs), and emergency procedures. Employees must comply with all safety standards, site-specific protocols, and mandated reporting obligations regarding suspected or observed abuse.

Work Schedule & Expectations
Standard shifts are typically 12 hours; however, employees may be required to extend hours or adjust schedules as needed.
Flexibility to work overnight, weekends, holidays, and overtime shifts is essential.
Primary work takes place in a home care facility, though assigned locations may vary.
Employees must comply with all state and site-specific requirements, including proof of required vaccinations (or approved waivers) and adherence to established safety protocols.

Primary Duties
Resident Care Responsibilities
Assist residents with all Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including lifting, positioning, mobility support, and personal care.
Implement and support each resident's individualized plan of care/Individual Program Plan (IPP) in alignment with assessments and established goals. This includes applying behavior support strategies, setting appropriate limits, and adhering to individualized behavior programs.
Demonstrate respect and dignity toward residents and their families at all times, recognizing and addressing psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare team members to ensure coordinated implementation of each resident's plan of care.
Serve as a resident advocate, protecting and promoting individual rights and ensuring all care decisions prioritize resident well-being.
Provide training and skill-building opportunities that foster independence and maximize resident capabilities.
Deliver services that promote residents' social, emotional, intellectual, developmental, and cognitive growth, while supporting their rights, autonomy, decision-making, and community access.
Facilitate positive interventions and Active Treatment to encourage engagement and meaningful participation in daily life.
Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and therapeutic home environment by performing designated housekeeping tasks such as cleaning, changing linens, vacuuming, dusting, mopping, and sanitizing bathrooms and surfaces.
Resident Support and Engagement Responsibilities
Support delivery of occupational, recreational, vocational, and educational therapy programs.
Apply creativity and problem-solving to address resident needs.
Show compassion and respect for residents at all stages of life.
Assist with onboarding and mentoring of new staff as needed.
Interact professionally with residents, families, and team members.
Ensure resident health, safety, and well-being at all times.
Engage residents in activities that promote learning, skill development, and independence.
Escort and support residents at community outings, medical appointments, and social activities.
Document resident data and contribute to care plans and behavioral interventions.
Observe, Document and Report. Respond to emergencies that involve the use of medical or behavioral interventions
Observe, document, and report residents' physical and behavioral conditions to the care team.
Respond to medical and behavioral emergencies using approved intervention techniques.
Conduct assessments at admission, daily, and when conditions change; document and follow up per policy.
Provide one-to-one supervision for residents on special precautions (e.g., elopement risk, suicide risk, serious medical conditions, or self-injurious behavior).
Assess respiratory needs and implement appropriate treatments.
Ensure safety of residents and staff through timely interventions.
Monitor and maintain emergency equipment, medications, and treatment supplies.
Accurately collect and record data per policies and procedures.
Document communication with families, staff, and professionals regarding resident needs.
Notify the Home Administrator of injuries or significant changes in resident condition.
Complete incident reports, update care plans, and monitor temporary conditions as required.
Administers respiratory treatments and medications in accordance with Respiratory Care Board regulations and scope of practice
Demonstrate competence in all technical and clinical skills within the respiratory therapist scope of practice.
Administer respiratory therapy treatments and maintain current knowledge of oxygen delivery methods, including potential hazards and side effects; provide specialized ventilator management as required.
Set up, operate, and monitor mechanical ventilators, including airway management and tracheal suctioning.
Inspect, operate, and test respiratory therapy equipment to ensure safe functionality and compliance with established standards.
Provide resident care in a manner that prioritizes safety and minimizes the risk of medical errors.
Interpret arterial blood gas (ABG) results and initiate appropriate interventions.
Administer medications in accordance with physician orders and established protocols to reduce risk of errors.
Notify physicians of changes in resident condition and ensure follow-up until appropriate action is taken.
Execute physician orders promptly and assist other medical personnel as needed.
Participate in shift handoffs by providing thorough reports, engaging in walking rounds, and documenting resident needs.
Perform other duties as assigned by the department manager.
Act on information received from shift reports, residents, or families to address resident concerns.
Accurately document all medications and treatments in resident records, including responses to care.
Perform routine respiratory care tasks, such as monitoring and recording vital signs.
Participate in resident meetings to review and understand treatment plans, while serving as an advocate for each resident's needs.
Contribute as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team to the development and implementation of each resident's Individual Program Plan (IPP)
Participate in resident care conferences and update care plans as appropriate.
Promote and uphold a culture of safety, quality, and compliance.
Attend review conferences for assigned residents and contribute to the development of long-term goals, skill-building tasks, behavioral plans, and objectives.
Performs light housework duties and other support
Support residents with personal needs, including laundry, light housekeeping, care of personal property, and organization of belongings.
Inspect fire alarms and extinguishers regularly to ensure they are current and in proper working condition.
Contribute to a positive and supportive dining experience for residents.
Perform additional duties and assignments as needed.
Ensure proper functioning of adaptive equipment and promptly report safety concerns
Remain calm and composed in emergency or high-stress situations to support proper response and instill confidence in others.
Adhere consistently and diligently to all established policies and procedures.
Handle and maintain adaptive equipment appropriately, ensuring proper care and routine upkeep.
Immediately report and address hazards, unsafe conditions, or defective equipment to the Home Administrator.
Attendance and participation of required training
Participate in a minimum of four ICS meetings each year.
Maintain licensure by completing all required continuing education units (CEUs).
Physical Demands
Employees must possess and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform the essential functions of this role. Duties may require standing, walking, bending, twisting, reaching above shoulder level, gripping, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling. Additional activities such as running, climbing, kneeling, squatting, sitting, balancing, or traveling may be required, sometimes in combination and at a rigorous level.
Employees must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle and follow established safety procedures when moving or lifting heavy objects, including the use of proper equipment and team assistance as needed. Work may also involve extended periods of sitting, desk work, and computer use.
The ability to meet these physical requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation, is essential to successful job performance.

The primary work setting is a home or assisted care facility. Site layouts may vary, and employees are required to comply with all established safety protocols, including infection prevention and control procedures. Employees must follow formal instructions regarding the safe and proper use of equipment.
Work may involve potential hazards such as exposure to heavy equipment, chemicals, communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, medications, and other conditions typical of a community care environment.
Employees will have frequent interaction with residents with developmental disabilities, including individuals who may exhibit aggressive or self-injurious behaviors. Regular communication with family members, coworkers, facility staff, and external partners is also required.
Required Qualifications & Education
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Current Respiratory License/Credentials from an accredited body (must be maintained). Preferred:
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT)
California Respiratory Care Practitioner License (RCP)
Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Respiratory Therapist or similar role preferred (not required).
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
