Job Description

The Nate Oldenhuis research group in the Department of Chemistry at the University of New Hampshire is looking for a highly motivated Research Laboratory Manager to join our team. This dual-role position combines laboratory management with postdoctoral-level research.


This position will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of our scientific laboratory, which includes managing the inventory and procurement of all lab chemicals and supplies, managing the supply budget, maintaining equipment, and ensuring safety protocols are followed. You will also supervise our undergraduate and graduate researchers, provide training in lab techniques, lab safety and pair students for mentoring. In addition to these managerial duties, you'll contribute to our ongoing research by spearheading your own projects at a post-doctoral level of research, guiding graduate student work, and taking the lead on data analysis, publications, and grant writing.


Duties/Responsibilities



Research (50%)


Lead synthesis, characterization, and material analysis in bio-inspired hydrogel materials which is the research focus of the NATO group. This is post-doctoral level research to work collaboratively and innovatively with Professor Nate Oldenhuis in developing new methods of analysis and new materials as a part of fulfilling the NIH and NSF grant criteria. Assist in designing and carrying out experiments to probe DNA hydrogel materials. This is post-doctoral level research to be the lead in developing new experiments and testing them for effectiveness as a part of fulfilling the NIH and NSF grant criteria. Contribute to research projects at a post-doctoral level, including method development, data analysis, and manuscript preparation. Prepare research findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific meetings.
Student training and management (20%)


Train and supervise graduate student research assistants, undergraduate student research assistants, senior thesis undergraduate students and student employees. Training will include lab safety, CEMS access and use, proper hazardous waste training, research techniques, utilizing research equipment safely and establishing mentoring pairing to provide additional research experience.
Lab Management (30%)


Maintain laboratory instrumentation and serve as a liaison for repairs and service. This includes the Applikon bioreactor, DHR20-Rheometer, Rotary evaporators, vacuum pumps, FTIR, ovens, HPLC, AEX, autoclaves, Chemi-DOC, freezers, refrigerators, and auto column. Ensure compliance with university safety policies and environmental health regulations. This position would serva as the lead contact for the NATO lab for any EH&S information, CEMS training, and any concerns. The Research Lab Manager will be the primary person placing orders in USHOP for the NATO lab and coordinating purchases from the Chemistry Stockroom for the group. The Research Lab Manager will maintain budget tracking for the research lab and work with SPA/STARTEAM2 to reconcile purchases in compliance with grant criteria as needed.

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:



Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field. Experience in an academic lab setting, preferably in biomaterials, organic synthesis, and mammalian cell culture. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills. Familiarity with safety protocols, chemical hygiene plans, and lab instrumentation. Student mentoring experience.


Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:



Experience in CEMS, USHOP, Microsoft Suite and Workday software.

Compensation Pay Range:


$52,520.00 - $93,640.00
