Job Description


Summary:

This position is responsible for leading and coordinating seabird research projects at the Alaska SeaLife Center.

Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelor s degree in biology, marine biology, zoology, or related field or the equivalent. Minimum of three years of work experience in a similar position is preferred, including field work. Experience with marine bird surveys, seabird identification, data collection, record keeping and data entry using survey software, and MS Excel is required. Experience with planning and implementing field research in Alaska is strongly preferred. Experience with operating small vessels in marine conditions is preferred.

Primary Responsibilities: * Functions as a coordinator for assigned research projects conducted at the Alaska SeaLife Center.

  • Functions as a lead coordinator in planning and conducting marine bird surveys along Kenai Peninsula. Participates in surveys, conducts bird counts, and collects environmental data to meet objectives of research. Communicates and coordinates work plans and schedules with team members and collaborators.
  • Prepares, programs, operates, and maintains instruments used for marine bird research, including a CTD instrument to collect habitat data for murrelet surveys in Kenai Fjords.
  • Participates in other seabird research projects as assigned including collection of behavioral and physiological data from seabirds. Conducts and summarizes observations of seabirds using remote camera systems. Assists other staff in facilitating avian research sampling and data collection.
  • Assists with and takes the lead as assigned in the procurement, inventory, and maintenance of equipment and supplies used in research projects.
  • Ensures accurate daily record keeping for research projects in spreadsheet, database, and word processing formats as assigned. Maintains proper records in accordance with the ASLC protocol requirements. Inputs data into records and assist with data analysis.
  • Performs laboratory sample analyses as assigned, including assisting with laboratory analysis of benthic invertebrate samples.
  • Assists with routine maintenance of research laboratory space and with other laboratory benchwork as assigned, including sample collection, laboratory analysis, and data entry. Ensures appropriate record keeping is maintained, including sample tracking records and database management.
  • Assists with preparing and presenting research data.
  • Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.
  • Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Skills and Abilities:

Must possess organizational skills for data collection. Ability to multi-task while working independently, ability to prioritize the importance of proper accurate data collection. Comfortable working many hours a day in a field or laboratory setting. Ability to interface with researchers as required. Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels, be organized, self-motivated, and possess a strong desire to see the completion of projects. Computer skills including Excel and Word.
