We are seeking a research assistant to help implement a research study being conducted in Winter 2026 in local 9th grade health and college readiness classes. This study will examine the effectiveness of a health decisions curriculum designed for 9th grade students at Mott Middle College and the Genesee Early College program. The curriculum emphasizes scientific reasoning and informational text reading comprehension skills. The research assistant will be the head instructor of the curriculum, assist with data collection in the classroom, and assist with data analysis.


The research assistant will work closely with Dr. Audrey Michal to implement the health decisions curriculum in local Flint schools, collect data in the classrooms (e.g., surveys, reading comprehension performance, and health decision performance), and analyze the collected data. All curricular materials and lesson plans will be provided.

Teach a 4-week health decisions curriculum during two sections each of 9th grade health classes, once at Mott Middle College, and once at the Genesee Early College Program during the Winter 2026 semester Oversee all in-class student activities associated with the curriculum Assist with three sessions of data collection at each school (e.g., collecting forms, helping students navigate online surveys) Assist with analyzing open-ended response data (coding qualitative data)

The candidate must be a current undergraduate student at UM-Flint. The candidate should have a background in psychology, with specific background knowledge in statistics and research design. Work experience in a K-12 school environment is preferred.

Work Schedule

The candidate will be expected to teach a 4-week curriculum at each school.

The first curriculum will begin on January 19th at Mott Middle College, where the candidate will be instructing 9th grade students during two 50-minute classes, 5 days per week. The second curriculum will begin March 9th at the Genesee Early College program, where the candidate will be instructing 9th grade students during two 2-hour classes, twice per week.

The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan
