Job Description




Iowa Workforce Development is seeking applicants for the position of Rehabilitation Assistant in the Mason City Area Office. As of July 1, 2023, Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services has become part of Iowa Workforce Development.

This position involves a combination of clerical and case management support along with provision of direct services to job candidates with disabilities. The Rehabilitation Assistant works in close partnership with the Rehabilitation Counselor to ensure that services are provided and the job candidate progresses toward their employment goals. The successful candidate will be highly organized, with strong clerical and interpersonal skills.

The Rehabilitation Assistant provides clerical support for the counselor to ensure that all office support activities are completed in a timely manner. Clerical duties of this role will include data entry into the case management system, collection of required data and documentation, completion and tracking of authorizations for billing and payment, greeting visitors, answering the phone, filing, and completion of other clerical duties with minimal supervision.

In this role, the Rehabilitation Assistant will provide case management support by assisting the counselor in monitoring the monthly caseload management report to ensure that important timelines are met. The assistant will schedule job candidates for appointments with counselor and organize meetings with partner agencies and area high schools. Maintaining frequent contact with job candidates is expected and the assistant will directly follow-up with job candidates to assist in monitoring their progress towards their employment goals.

The Rehabilitation Assistant will work directly with job candidates. The Rehabilitation Assistant will provide an orientation to potential applicants and will conduct initial interviews with new applicants to gather information. The assistant will facilitate job seeking skills training and directly assist job candidates with their job search. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working with job candidates individually and in small groups. This position involves working with a diverse population, including high school students. The assistant may also work with area businesses to learn about business needs and make connections on behalf of the job candidate.

This position requires frequent travel throughout our Mason City Area Office coverage area and occasional statewide travel for trainings and meetings.

The successful candidate must be able to pass a criminal background check conducted by the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification: * Two years of full-time work experience in a human services field which involved: customer service, contact with the public to either compile or provide information regarding services, the organization/management of confidential information, or the scheduling of appointments.
  • Two years of full-time work experience as a legal assistant/paralegal, medical office assistant, or job coach.
  • A combination of a total of two years of education and full-time experience (as described in either number one or two), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work in direct client/customer service in a clerical or administrative support capacity.
