QUALIFICATIONS:



1. Graduate of a Professional Nursing Program approved by the

Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

2. Current license as a Registered Professional Nurse in the

Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

3. 1-3 years experience in pediatrics, community health, or related

field.

4. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Required.

5. Eligibility for Certification in School Nursing by the

Massachusetts Department of Education required.

6. Maintains current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation

And first aid.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The school nurse manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing a school health program for the school population. The School Nurse Manager is a nursing professional who advocates for children's health and safety within the educational setting and provides culturally competent care to all members of the school community. Responsibilities include program management, nursing services, collaboration, health education, community health planning, and professional practice.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

The school nurse manager reports to the principal of the school. The school nurse seeks consultation from district Nursing Leaders and the School Physician.

RESPONSIBILITIES:



Establishes and manages a comprehensive school health program for the St. Michael's school community.

Is responsible for the policies, procedures, and staffing of the Saint Michael School Health Office. Oversees the management, requirements, and programs of all grant funding. Promotes positive safe practices both within and outside of the school, and ensures that the school has an emergency plan which is communicated to personnel and students. Organizes and implement State-mandated health screening programs, makes appropriate referrals and follows-up on vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening failures:
Vision and Hearing Screenings (nursery thru grade 8)

Scoliosis Screenings (grades 5-8)

BMI (grades 1, 4, and 7)

SBIRT (grade 7)

Ensures compliance with immunization laws and makes recommendations for exclusion of students who do not comply. Maintain a comprehensive and up-to-date school health record on each student. Collaborates with school administrators and personnel in assessing and improving the social and emotional climate of students and faculty; involves them in maintaining a healthful school environment. Uses population-based data collection to plan and evaluate the school health program. Prepares regular reports to school officials and the MDPH and other agencies. Interprets school health service needs and the role of the school nurse manager to the school and community. Carries out communicable disease prevention and infection control based on current guidelines for universal precautions, prevention of bloodborne pathogens exposure and hazardous medical waste disposal. Consults with the School Physician, School Administrators, and others to establish, review and revise policies, procedures, and specific programs for comprehensive school health education and services. Ensures the orientation, training, supervision and evaluation of paraprofessionals as needed.
Assesses and evaluates student's health, and degree of significance of health problems on student educational progress.

Collaborates with the parent/guardian and student, where appropriate, to develop and implement an individualized health care plan for student. Responds to frequently encountered health issues, providing counseling and crisis intervention when required. Responds to child neglect or abuse issues (as required by Massachusetts statute) Provides first aid to injured children and staff. Documents first aid and illness care provided to staff and students. Maintains an electronic log in Renweb/Facts of all health room activities. Completes incident/accident reports. Provides care to acutely ill children and staff during the school day. Administers medications appropriately in keeping with state regulations and school policy on administration of medications in school. Provides medically prescribed interventions. Recommends exclusion and monitors re-admission of students to school for students with infectious or communicable diseases.
Collaborates with school and community providers and state agencies to meet the health and social service needs of students.

Serves as a leader/facilitator of the school based Wellness committee Identifies health related needs for inclusion in the individual education plan Acts as an advocate for the student and family when appropriate Attends educational team meetings as needed. Participates as a team member; with parental consent when indicated, shares information with other team members about children with medical needs which affect learning and growth: includes the student and parent in the team conference whenever possible and appropriate. Establishes a process to identify students at risk for physical and psychosocial problems, communicates health needs to other school personnel as appropriate and establishes a culturally appropriate referral system using internal and community resources.
Assists students, families, and groups to achieve optimal levels of wellness through health education and promotion.

Identifies cultural and community needs for health education. Teaches the basic principles of health promotion and disease prevention to students and staff. Assumes responsibilities for in-service programs for school personnel for universal precautions, first aid, emergency care procedures, and current health issues. Acts as a resource in health education to school personnel, students and families.
Participates with other members of the community to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate school health services and community services which include the broad continuum of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention:

Understands and applies core public health functions of assessment, policy, development, and assurance. Uses community resources for culturally appropriate referral of students with unmet health needs, including the need for a primary care provider or medical insurance coverage. Interprets school health service needs and the role of the school nurse to the school and community. Uses internet-based communication to convey important health information and to promote the health of the student population and school community.
: Applies appropriate nursing theory as the basis for decision-making in the school setting while expanding knowledge and skills in response to the student health needs and participating in research.

Demonstrates current knowledge in such areas as professional issues in school nursing, school and community health, communicable disease control, growth and development, Health assessment, special emergency care, health counseling, health education and promotion, and current adolescent issues. Assumes responsibility for continuing own education. Maintains certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Obtains expert consultation, supervision and peer review as needed.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provision of St. Michael's policy on evaluation.

Pay: $35.00 - $40.00 per hour

Expected hours: 7 per week
