About MedStar Georgetown\'s Spine Surgery, Epilepsy and Neuro Medical Unit \xe2\x80\x93 C5-3

C5-3 is a newly renovated 14 bed adult Neuro Medical Unit with all private rooms. C5-3 nurses work collaboratively with members of the healthcare team to provide high-quality, patient-centered, specialty care. Nurses work side by side with a Nurse Practitioner to manage the post-operative care of the orthopedic and neurosurgical spine patients. Nurses utilize state of the art Natus monitoring to care for patients to either rule out epilepsy or determine more advanced treatments for their epilepsy. These patients are on 24hr video EEG monitoring and may be candidates for Ictal-SPECT scans to determine the area of the brain that is generating their seizures. The nurses also provide care to neurological patients, including Multiple Sclerosis patients who may require intravenous immunoglobulin treatment.

Flexible PRN Self- Scheduling: Minimum of 6 shifts required in a 6-week schedule

The incumbent in this position is responsible for providing competent professional nursing care using the nursing process. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Medstar Georgetown University Hospital\'s philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.
Education

  • Associate\'s degree in Nursing required
  • Bachelor\'s degree or higher in Nursing preferred
Experience
  • 1-2 years At least two (2) years recent acute care experience in the relevant patient care area required
Licenses and Certifications
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the District of Columbia required
  • BLS - Basic Life Support required
  • Certification in specialty or related specialty preferred
  • C-EFM - Electronic Fetal Monitoring from the National Certification Corporation (NCC) is required for Perinatal nurses (labor and delivery, antepartum, antenatal testing) within 12 months from date of hire. New graduate nurses or new to specialty nurses (labor and delivery, antepartum, antenatal testing) will have 15 months from date of hire to obtain the EFM certification.

Delegates and supervises nursing staff in providing patient care and assumes leadership roles, e.g., charge nurse role. Participates in the development and implementation of quality activities.
  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Serves as a preceptor or mentor. Participates in professional development activities. Incorporates evidence-based practice and research into patient care delivery.
