Job Overview:

The Registered Nurse coordinates and performs a variety of nursing care procedures for patients/residents, requiring professional knowledge and consideration of specific patient conditions and treatments and the ability to work independently in completing assignments. Guidelines include physician\xe2\x80\x99s orders; standards of care, nursing policies and procedures manuals, hospital policies, long term care policies, nursing duties include support to individuals of all ages and their families.

Responsibilities:

• Supervise the total nursing activities for all patients/residents during your working hours assuring patient/resident safety.
• Develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-departmental personnel, as well as other departments within the facility to assure that nursing services and activities can be adequately maintained to meet the needs of the patients/residents.
• Assist in developing and maintaining nursing objectives and standards.
• Assist in developing, implementing and coordinating department policies and procedures, resident/patient care plans, nursing procedure manuals, job descriptions, etc.
• Interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, residents/patients, visitors, family members, etc., as necessary.
• Ensure that each patient\xe2\x80\x99s/resident\xe2\x80\x99s right to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy, property and civil rights, including the right to wage a complaint, is followed by the appropriate personnel.
• Assure that patients/residents have a clean, safe, orderly and comfortable environment. Report needs to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO)/Director of Nursing (DON).
• Assure that established infection control procedures and isolation techniques are followed at all times.
• Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and a positive environment.
• Assist in the training of department personnel and make recommendations to the CNO/DON concerning training.
• Perform administrative requirements such as completing necessary forms, reports, etc., and submitting to the CNO/DON.
• Assist in evaluating and assisting medical, social, psychological, spiritual, restorative and rehabilitative care plans, as well as instructions in self-help.
• Maintain CONFIDENTIALITY of all pertinent patient/resident care information to assure the patients\xe2\x80\x99/residents\xe2\x80\x99 rights are protected.
• Evaluate emergencies and determine emergency measures to be used.
• Make independent decisions regarding nursing care.
• Complete required record keeping forms on patient/resident admission, discharge, transfer, etc.
• Assure that all nurses\xe2\x80\x99 notes are informative and descriptive of the nursing care provided and of the patient\xe2\x80\x99s response to the care.
• Notify physician of accidents and fill out and complete accident/incident report forms.
• Assure that a stock level of medications, medical supplies, equipment, etc., is maintained at the adequate levels at all times. Report needs to the CNO/DON, or Purchasing Agent.
• Attend and participate in workshops, seminars, etc., as approved.
• Give and receive nursing report upon reporting in and ending shift work hours.
• Receive verbal orders from physicians and chart on the physician\xe2\x80\x99s order sheet or the electronic medical record.
• Transcribe physician\xe2\x80\x99s orders to the electronic documentation system, lab slips, MAR, dietary requisitions, etc.
• Make out work requisitions for unsafe conditions or equipment repairs.
• Observes, records, and reports to physician patient\xe2\x80\x99s condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
• Other duties as deemed necessary and appropriate, or as may be directed.

• Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing (Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in nursing, Associate degree in nursing or Diploma in nursing).

• None required, but experience in an acute care/emergency department/long term care facility preferred.

• An unrestricted RN license in the State of Alaska must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
• Must have BLS, ACLS, & PALS or must be obtained within six months of hire and biannually thereafter.
• Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification, preferred.

• Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language.
• Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
• Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents/patients, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
• Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations and guidelines pertaining to hospital and long term care.
• Must possess leadership ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise professional and non-professional personnel.
• Must have the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, procedures, etc. of the Nursing Service Department.
• Must maintain the care and use of supplies, equipment, etc. and maintain the appearance of nursing areas; must perform regular inspections of the nursing unit for sanitation, order, safety and proper performance of assigned duties.
• Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm , as well as be willing to handle patients/residents based on whatever level they are currently functioning.
• Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices.

• Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day.
• Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
• Must possess sight/hearing senses, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
• Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with patients/residents, personnel, and support agencies.
• Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
• Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times, hostile people within the facility.
• May be required to lift residents/patients, medical equipment, supplies, etc.
