Job Description

Position Summary:

Code enforcement officers have a complex job, working with businesses and residents, understanding

the myriads of codes, and educating customers to help bring them into compliance with the law. Code

enforcement conducts field inspections, writes letters, and coordinates enforcement efforts with Code

Enforcement Supervisor. Enforcement is a vital part in keeping our city beautiful.

Essential Functions: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may

include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrative only

and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

1. Enforces provisions of City zoning ordinance by receiving and evaluating complaints, performs site

inspections sending violation notices, and works with the City Attorney as necessary.

2. EnforcesCitysigncodethrough issuance ofsignpermits andsending violationnotices andworkswith

planners on other sign enforcement action as necessary.

3. Receives, reviews, responds, and follows through on nuisance complaints, including weeds, dust, noise,

encroachments, and related problems.

4. Identifieshillsideordinance violations,illegaldumping, andvandalismofpublicpropertyandreports to

appropriate City department.

5. Meetswithpeopleinvolved incodeviolationsituations.bothpersonslodgingcomplaints andthe alleged

code violator, to resolve code violation problems.

6. Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions:

Primary work environment is inspection site environment and driving a vehicle. Frequent standing,

sitting, and walking; some climbing, stooping, crouching, and bending; and some inspecting in

confined areas. Exposure to dust and noise. Moderate physical activity exerting up to 20-50 pounds of

force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently. Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or

windy conditions caused by weather. Exposure to stress as a result of dealing with people. Irregular

work schedule may be required.

Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Minimum oftwo(2) yearsfull-time public contact involving interpretationor

enforcement of laws and regulations, i.e., land use,safety regulations, building or

business regulation, orrelated field.

Licenses and/or Certifications: Must possess a valid driver's license. A valid Utah

Driver License must be obtained within d0 days of hire and be maintained throughout

employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

City codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations pertaining to zoning and code enforcement. Safe and efficient work practices asthey relate to zoning and code enforcement. Principles, practices, methods, and techniques of code violation investigation and enforcement. Positive interpersonal, public relations, and customerservice. Arithmetic and basic mathematical calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
division.

Ability to:

Learn to interpret and enforce zoning, land use rules, and building codes. Learntosimultaneouslyinvestigatemultipleinquiriesandcomplaints,conductmultiplefieldinspections,
accurately document findings and maintain appropriate records.

Enforce pertinent codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations with impartiality andefficiency. Respond to inquiries, complaints, and requestsforservice in a fair,tactful, and firm manner. Analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine proper course ofaction. Analyzesituationsanddevelopsolutions;identify,interpret,explain,andenforceviolations;reviewand
interpret codes and rules; and maintain awareness of safety at all times.

Obtain information through interview and dialogue and work fairly and courteously with the public. Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effectivemanner. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Use a computer, calculator, typewriter, telephone, facsimile machine, photocopy machine, and
photographic camera.

Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with all levels of personnel as well asthe public. Maintain effective working relations with supervisors, coworkers, public officials, and the public.

Pay: $15.65 per hour

Expected hours: 28 per week
