The Town of Youngsville is seeking responsible, energetic, and enthusiastic team members

to serve as Recreation Aides on its Parks and Recreation team!

Located in the beautiful piedmont region of central North Carolina and in the County of Franklin, Youngsville sits within a few hours of the coast and the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. We are less than a 30-minute drive from Research Triangle Park (RTP) and the RDU International Airport. With approximately 2,000 residents, our community is one of small-town character with a desire for excellence and innovation. Youngsville is projected to experience significant growth as new residents flow into the RTP region and as neighboring Wake County becomes more congested.

General Statement of Job

Under direct supervision, assists Parks and Recreation Department management in providing general assistance and support to assigned recreation program and activities; sets-up and issues equipment for recreational activities; assists in providing on-site supervision of recreation program and activity participants; and performs a variety of general and routine administrative tasks in support of recreation programs.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides general assistance within an assigned recreation program including preschool, sports, special events, after school programs, day camps, arts and crafts, or other recreation programs
  • Assists in providing on-site supervision to program participants.
  • Assists program participants in recreation activities in assigned areas.
  • Assists in preparing recreational facilities for use including ensuring that appropriate equipment and supplies are available for classes and events.
  • Sets up and takes down equipment.
  • Perform basic field maintenance of town facilities (e.g. mow lawns, chalk fields).
  • Issues and collects recreation equipment and supplies.
  • Assists as directed in an instructional setting including recreation area supervision, classroom work, and assisting children with a variety of problems and questions.
  • Assists chaperones and/or parents during recreation events.
  • Assists coaches and umpires of organized games and sports activities.
  • Maintains official scorebooks, operates scoreboards, receives/distributes information from/to team coaches.
  • Completes accident/incident reports as needed.
  • Assists in the encouragement of participation and good sportsmanship.
  • Responds to public inquires in a courteous manner.
  • Provides information within the area of assignment.
  • Performs a variety of routine office work including assisting at the front counter and answering phones.
Minimum Training and Experience

Education and Experience:
  • Must be at least 16 years of age at time of application.
  • Education at a level that provides the ability to read and understand instructions.
  • A minimum of 50 hours of volunteer or paid experience in the recreation field is desirable.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to operate a telephone and copying machine.
  • Ability to understand and respond to the public and staff\'s requests for assistance both on the telephone and in person.
  • Ability to sit, stand, stoop or bend, and see.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.
Performance Indicators

Knowledge:
  • Basic operations, services and activities of a recreation program.
  • General sports and recreational activities and programs including the techniques, rules and equipment used in various sports, games and special events.
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures within the area of assignment.
  • Policies and procedures relating to the safety of participants.
  • Basic rules and regulations governing competitive group athletic games and sporting events.
Skills:
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to operate basic small machinery (e.g. lawn mower, weed trimmer, chalking machine).
  • Ability to operate effectively around groups of children and parents
Abilities:
  • Provide general assistance and support for assigned recreation programs and activities.
  • Organize and supervise a variety of activities at various types of sites recognizing the basic needs of those involved in the programs.
  • Effectively interact with the public and town staff.
  • Set up and take down equipment for programs and special events.
  • Respond to emergency situations.
  • Perform duties outdoors involving walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting.
  • Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions utilizing the English language.
  • Get from one location to another while working.
  • Maintain enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.
