The Railing Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates fo rcustom railing systems, including handrails, guardrails, glass railings, and ornamental metalwork. This role involves reviewing architectural drawings, interpreting specifications, quantifying materials and labor, and collaborating with sales, design, and project management teams to support bidding and proposal efforts.
Key Responsibilities:
? Analyze architectural and structural drawings, specifications, and scope documents to
determine project requirements.
? Perform material take-offs and develop detailed cost estimates for railing systems.
? Request and evaluate quotes from suppliers, subcontractors, and vendors.
? Develop pricing strategies that align with company margins, production capabilities, and client expectations.
? Prepare and submit professional bid proposals, including scope clarifications,
exclusions, and lead times.
? Coordinate with project managers, designers, and engineers to ensure alignment
between estimates and actual project execution.
? Track and maintain historical pricing data and update cost databases regularly.
? Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client consultations as needed.
? Monitor bid deadlines, follow up with clients, and support the transition from estimating to
project kickoff.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
? Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and processes--especially
related to railing and architectural metalwork.
? Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings and specifications.
? Proficient in take-off software, Excel, and estimating platforms (e.g., Bluebeam,
PlanSwift, or similar).
? Detail-oriented with strong numerical and analytical skills.
? Excellent communication and organizational skills.
? Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously.
? Associate or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture,
or a related field preferred.
Preferred Experience:
? 2-5 years of experience in construction estimating, preferably with a focus on metal,
railing, or specialty architectural trades.
? Familiarity with glass, stainless steel, aluminum, and powder-coated finishes.
? Understanding of relevant building codes (e.g., IBC, ADA) and their impact on railing
design and cost.
